Let's do this once again, Jow Forums. What is your personal folder structure? Everyone knows prefabricated solutions that OSes usually ship with are never good. So what is your solution?
Myself, I'm currently considering the structure as follows. I took some of the criticisms received before and then made attempts at fixing it as it was. Most important addition was moving personal media and documents together under "personal". This is becoming to look good. apps: -- standalone applications bat -- scripts and programming related projects bookmarks -- internet bookmarks bup -- backups of various files, grouped by date and file source downloads: -- various downloads, unsorted bittorrent -- torrent downloads edumedia: -- educational media, categorized by specific area of interest (programming, history, art, etc.) manuals -- equipment manuals fonts: -- typefaces, grouped by style and family essentials -- essential culturally important typefaces games -- vidya media -- various media, including video, audio, literature, images, grouped either by topic or media type personal -- personal media, photos, videos, documents projects -- personal projects tmp -- random unsorted junk folder
I'm assuming unix style filesystem, since pic related. Why make separate folders for system stuff? Just use ~/.fonts/ for your fonts, since those are where programs tend to look. Just put everything else in ~/.

Also I use tmsu to "tag" my files, this is especially useful for music/porn. Hierarchical filesystems were a bad idea.

I do it too, easier to type when using command line no tab necessary etc) and quicker to read.

An organization rule that I use is to never put a file in a directory that contains subdirectories.

Don't think of the image much. It was used due to looking best not because it shows a system folder structure that this thread doesn't concern itself with. Also I'm primarily on Winblows so a folder structure that can be migrated with no change is the best for me. I use a font manager, which installs fonts by making shortcuts in the target destination, so I don't have to physically install them and worry about removing them safely. That's why this folder is not part of a system font folder. I got used to them. "bup" stands for "backup" as used by the dvd file structure file extension. "bat" carries over from the batch script files as used by Windlows, though there are more file types there. >tmp - temporary folder which I never actually delete anything from I usually try to sort it and then send the files there to most relevant locations from time to time. Some get deleted in the process. >Hierarchical filesystems were a bad idea You can't really transfer those tags outside of the system, can you?

I use the distro names of choice, so: Pictures/ Videos/ Documents/ Music/ Downloads/ Anything else I put in my User folder.

I just use the Linux filesystem. Only excption is my hoard of ebooks under the "Library" section, and my projects under the "Projects" section. Both of which are in the /home/user/ directory.

Music unsorted, I just use foobar's search. Games installed and promptly deleted when finished, otherwise unsorted in the torrents folder. Don't watch movies. Programming projects unsorted. Utilities and installers unsorted, except the folder where I store programs to maintain my MLP folder. Android folder sorted by phone, ROMs, phone-specific flashers, that kind of crap. Memes semi-sorted in a few folders. Download everything to my desktop so it annoys me until I sort it, download folders are pure evil. Pony pics in one huge folder, organized by tags in file names.
