They were the best graphics workstations that money could buy. It has nothing to do with price and everything to do with the high end graphics hardware inside, and IRIX which is the most polished Unix system. 4Dwm makes CDE look like a toy.

Want a laugh? Read the Classic Mac memory management article on Wikipedia. The design of it might be even worse then AmegaOS which is saying something.

Even Nekochanners would tell you SGI hardware was overpriced to hell and back, mostly a function of shitty corporate culture. Certainly fast, fantastic high-bandwidth architecture on the tail end of the "golden age" but still $50 grand for four megabyte texture memories and the slowest big iron RISC on the market. Yuck. Post-1995 SGI was definitely more of a software based decision than a hardware one.

IRIX is a nice UNIX, but it's not special, it has flaws like every OS.
