I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as a font, is in fact, a generic library of type, or as I've recently taken to calling it, a typeface. A typeface is not typed text unto itself, but rather another generic "font" without application of point, color, etc.
For instance, times new roman is a typeface, but 12pt times new roman italicized is a font
