I have a dying iPhone 5s and the thought of spending $800+ on a phone seems absurd to me. I’m looking to spend no more than $300 on my next phone. But I’m not a phone person, so I don’t really know what the good options are. I’ve been looking at the ASUS Zenfones and I can’t really tell the difference.

Whatever phone you're getting a snapdragon 820 and 4GB of RAM is the absolute minimum if you want to use it as an UMPC. Limbo x86 recently got a big qemu update so that should help further with x86 cpu emulation. You can still KVM ARM loonix distros tho I think.

However because your phone does not have a desktop intel/amd CPU it has to trick windows into thinking it does which is possible through QEMU which is included in Limbo X86 which can be downloaded and installed from here:
However because phone CPUs are inherently slow you need the latest snapdragon 820 chip or newer in order to run windows at a tolerable speed.

I appreciate you taking the time to actually explain that. To be honest, I don’t think I’d need to have a Windows capable device in my pocket. I don’t need or quite frankly want to be that connected. I also don’t like the mobile platform in general for anything more than just classic phone functions plus web browsing and a decent camera. I’d rather carry around a small laptop if I needed that.

Yeah x86 has had a pretty hard time reviving them due to how inefficient it is under 5W. Intel's atoms came the closest but performance is just too abysmal for modern day windows 10 and they sold them at a loss as well (see x86 zenfone).
Modern day 820+ and newer really crank out that integer/DPFP in single threaded tasks with the 855 rivaling laptop i3 kabylake performance at the same clockspeed.
That might be usable with ~2GHz A53 based snapdragons.
It's honestly a work in progress kind of thing right now but is a major push for android smartphones including 10-12GB of RAM these days. Currently limbo x86 is limited to 2GB RAM anyway so it's not like you could run crysis on them YET.

Use gsmarena and compare the phones you mentioned with flagships from 2-3 years ago from Samsung, Google, etc. They have better res screens, high quality cameras, ram, storage, battery, software, etc. The software is a generation behind but at least samsung still gives security updates(even to s7). Others don't offer any updates.
IMO you are better getting an Glaxy s7/edge or a premium phone from 3 years ago than buying that crap. iPhones hold a lot of value over the years and it does not worth it because of low specs. (for example an 6S)
I'm from EU and I can't recommend a price but do your research.
