Signal is best replacement for SMS/ mobile based messengers and also has lots of other features. It's easy to use even for normies as a a drop in replacement for other messengers.can also do voice video and group with other users.

Wire is a Skype like alternative but open source and with better privacy. If you do a lot of voice and video and or don't want to use a phone number it's a nice alternative.

Matrix / Riot client are hugely full featured and federated, consider a replacement for Discord or Slack as well as others. Some say matrix is the next gen XMPP. definitely worth supporting but still developing of course.
