Well netbooks sorta were this weren't they?

you can get them from Ebay etc. as used machines

many of them seem to work even today, 20 years after being released

not sure if its superb engineering or being well preserved by those who paid a lot of money for them

(((they))) do make them, just not that exact model

Libretto is 5.6 inch
Netbook is 10 inch

There is one obvious flaw in Libretto and its not the screen, which is comfortable enough

Its the keyboard, its simply too small for anyone with larger than baby fingers

thats bullshit, i have not gorilla tier but larger than average hands and i'm very comfortable typing on a gemini (psion 5 keyboard) using 3 finger for hand. its not a desktop typing experience but its really comfy and it fucking fit in you pocket.

I still have one in storage. What's your offer?
Last time I used it was 2008.

Niche product with extremely limited practical applications. If you 'need' a hardware keyboard, anything smaller than an x220 becomes impractical or uncomfortable to actually type on for any length of time so you might as well be typing on or dictating into your phone.

I love the aesthetic, is it possible to retrofit this with a modern board and os?

these arent worth the price people ask from them

30 euros should be enough but it isnt because no one sells them for 30 euros

there is no modern x86 board that is small enough
nobody makes this small x86 computers, libretto was smallest in 1999 and it is still smallest in 2019

isnt gpd pocket x86?

*blocks your path*

this is pretty close

gpd win 2.
active cooling.

>literally 4x the screen size
"no"

Here you go op. A more modern example.

What about something like a LattePanda?

Sweety...

Doesn't that cost ~$600?

Pretty great price, uh?
Like 1/4th of what a Libretto costed in 1997, when we don't even count for inflation, even less then we do.

Depends on the specs. What's wrong with a stripped RPi with a screen & bluetooth keyboard?

best umpc for gaming is the GPD Win 2.
Otherwise, best option is pic related

I'm so thirsty for one of these, but at the back of my mind i keep thinking "would i really use it, could i really use it"

Gemini PDA

So go buy one?

>GPD Win 2
Does it even have HDMI out?
And what's that pic of

All GPD devices have some kind of hdmi out, usually mini or micro or whatever the fuck it is. That one is their latest sysadmin model with a fucking rs232 port of all things

Has USB-C, so you can output via dongle or dock.

>sysadmin model
>rs232 port of all things
Sysadmins need those on a daily basis

is 7 inch too big? runs windows or linux.

Get a keyboard for this thicc girl?

Attached: thick.jpg (695x695, 94K)

If you're more industrious you could take a "stick pc" like pic related and, with a lion battery and an old case from ebay, make a portable pc.

Nothing, if the point wasn't x86.

That's not a Win 2 though. That's the one for sysadmin shitters, forgot the name.
Yes Win 2 is best for gaming.

You could even start with a micro Atom board and work from there. I agree Atom isn't ideal, but it's basically x86 at least?

Attached: tiny atom.jpg (475x300, 24K)

I don't think I would use it much, and my thinkpad x201 is already very comfy and fits in my backpack perfectly.

wtf is that thing? what's it use case?

Tfw i started to collect early 2000 to 2008ish netbooks. The ones i get fucked i fix. Already spent a great amount of money on a dumb addiction fueled by a thought of "i will use some of the when i get out and need to write shit" and for now, i rarely took one of the backpack, and when i did so, i did nothing other than shitpost/check if everything is ok with tasks i let running at home/check server. Maybe i wrote 2 paragraphs of my dissertation? I cant remember.

Netbooks are shit, GPD is basic sucking the small form factor crazy/nostalgia and i really doubt that other than a handful of tasks and occasions could benefit from it. And for that, is not really worth the money. Imo

Tiny keyboard is the worst thing ever. I have long muscian's fingers and fucking hell tiny keyboards fucking suck ass.

>atom
dropped

Depends on what Atom, modern Atom is very capable as far as low power solutions go, next up would be Ryzen, but I don't think there are any that can get by with as little power as Atom, in terms of performance per watt at least.

Modern atoms are quite good

well you're not getting proper x86 in a small package so just give up them

you can thanks non-bga chips, this this the major flaw in most modern hardware

I think that was a $2500 computer when it was released. Keyboard is too small for western fingers.

They look cool and are a must-have for any portable collector but they're really not at all great to use as a primary computer, the mouse placement is terrible for prolonged use and the keyboard somehow manages to feel even more cramped than what you'd get on a Windows CE Handheld PC.

Back when they were new they were quite expensive and few people really ended up buying them except for some really niche applications where a PDA wouldn't do, for example my 110CT was carried around in a utility truck and used to dial into the company mainframe remotely and pretty much nothing else, probably part of the reason so many are in good shape as noted. Mine even still has a working battery.

UMPCs in general were only really good at some specific niche jobs and most of them were just used as glorified PDAs and tablets, which is why those along with smartphones gutted them into nothing.

Imagine being the sasquatch actually using one of these in public.

cute but pointless like most small technology.
Intel NUC is about as small as I need.

librettos do have BGA chips though

doing anything on a screen that size is awful
like, I can hook up a keyboard to my phone and run real X applications on it and it'd be okay... but using the 5.8 inch screen for any extended period of time is just awful

and then on a device like that, you've got an undersized keyboard -- at least on my phone, the bluetooth keyboard I've hooked up to it is basically full size
wouldn't want to type on a 5-6 inch keyboard for any amount of time, and they're not spaced nicely for thumb typing
shit's just too small in general

Screen's not really bad on those, it's just the fatigue you get from using that shitty mouse for more than 5 minutes at a time.

>sysadmin model with a fucking rs232 port
YESSS.

screen is ok, do you even realize it is 800x480, pixels per inch is actually not even bad because of this resolution
