You didn't answer his question. Up until the 1080p drop, a single resolution was the standard for decades. 1080p took off because of the introduction of thin, comparably light weight screens combined with a huge and noticeable increase in resolution. It was a revolution in TVs, and 4k is not, so people are content continuing to use their 1080p screens. This is the reason why HDR is mostly limited to 4k, not because 1080p screens can't have HDR, but because TV manufacturers are trying to entice people to make the leap.

The only reason I jumped ship from CRT in 2007 was because I was going to college, and a 40" CRT was heavy as hell. Got a 28" 720p/1080i LCD Olevia, which I used until I got a 42" 1080p LED Sony for Xmas in 2012 or 2013. Last Xmas season, I purchased myself a 55" Quantum Dot Samsung during a sale that knocked off $400 from the price.

It's 4k, but due to the devices hooked up to it and my internet speed (20mb/sec down), I've never seen anything in 4k. I don't regret upgrading, since I wanted a bigger screen and internet speeds will only continue to improve, but I can't imagine upgrading again. I've got 4k, HDR, FALD, and 120hz natural refresh rate, and I just don't see anything coming down the tube that I would care about. Even if it breaks, I'd probably just repair it.

Most of Jow Forums uses thinkpads, which can do 720p just fine, 1080p and you're looking to potential house fire, 2K is not playable.

I download lossless blu-ray rips.
I have very good vision, but I can really hardly tell the difference between a 1080p and 4k blu-ray rip.
I also have an older oculus rift though which is 1080p, but there you can actually see the pixels and it's easy to conclude 4k will be much better.
tldr: you only need 4k+ when the screen is literally on your face.

Colour vs B&W is a whole new ball game. Resolution is an incremental upgrade.

Not to mention, it's a big increase in processing power that could be better utilized on other, more noticable factors, like frame rate and HDR.

2k is 2048 pixels wide. 1080p is 1920 pixels wide. 1080p is 93.75% the resolution of 2k. I'm not seeing a good argument to pay a bunch of money to get a 12.5% increase in overall resolution. It's probably why most screen/tv manufacturers decided to skip over it in case of 4k, which is 3,840 pixels wide, or literally 4x the resolution of 1080p.

I don’t get the point, 2k monitors are widely available and I managed to pick up a fairly decent one win 144hz and 1ms response time for a fairly decent price... well below what I paid for my old 1080p 144hz one when 144hz was still relatively new. So, what is the complaint? 2k monitors are widely available at relatively good prices, even 4K ones are not wildly expensive. 1080p is only ‘standard’ in that it is the most widely used because it is the cheapest and the majority of monitors are in use for general purposes where high resolution and isn’t a priority.

Why would I need more than 720p on a phone or more than 1080p on a desktop or laptop when it's impossible to tell the difference between those and 2k+ in 99% of daily tasks? Phones are literally upscaling everything and simulating a 480p resolution at best, it's obvious that there isn't an advantage in having more than that many pixels. You're just wasting battery life.
