Tysons Corner is a soulless place. Similar to Seattle's East Side (Bellevue + Redmond). Seattle proper is not too bad though.

Silicon Valley has virtually no homeless people. It's 95% white and asian.

I've literally never heard of a programming company test for drugs. I've worked for defense contractors and never gotten tested. If they asked me to piss in a cup to work at a company I'd just decline the job and I don't even smoke. It's just fucking weird.

I live in Perth where we have a similar situation (though commodity boom, not tech) and we have very rich people and lots of homeless that come with it. This is the problem with cities specialising in sectors, the workers in other industries struggle to live in the same environment (cost of living) that the booming sector lives in.

I've been saying this for months now. Moved here a year ago from LITERALLY WHERE and I can tell this is where all the San Francisco companies and talent will move soon. It's relatively cheap, the infrastructure is here, we already have amazing tech companies and talent (e.g. Microsoft & Amazon), the diversity is similar, et cetera. I'll be buying a house probably in the next year or two and I can't wait to see the value sky rocket when the flood gates open.

This is the mindset problem with both the booming industry in my area and your area.
You're not understanding how capital works, your not understanding how your booming industry impacts the living standards of those not lucky enough to be in your specific industry.
Eventually, what goes around comes around and soon it will impact your boom economy when you find your taxes increases in order to deal with the "homeless problem" in your region. This is what causes the boom bust economy.

With or without a clearance? Generally if you're working for as a contractor for those sorts of companies that require a S/TS clearance of some sort you usually have to pass a drug test.

So while it seems like there is opportunity in other nearby areas, the fact is that it is not feasible to their situation.

I agree about Austin. It's just like California now. Won't take long before the Californians turn it to shit, but we got a good 10-15 years of low tax, good food, good music with hot body conscious women everywhere coming up.

It sounds crazy, but West Loop Chicago is looking great for tech of late. Sure it's high tax, hopelessly corrupt and cold here but it's actually a real city unlike SV or Austin.

I worked and lived in Austin, my sense is that it's a mirage where the job market is brutal with incompetent management and engineers, low pay, and leftover projects from the c-suite. Basically they want mid-level engineers but they pay you entry-level while treating you like intern trash. I was glad to leave that God-forsaken city.
