its never a good time

Is it the lack of games decent hardware or both?

Windows mixed reality is around $200, but it has some major problems so choose for yourself

this, the VR ship has unfortunately sunk and won't be getting back up in the foreseeable future.
Unless something happens that makes VR VERY accessible and require minimal to no setup its going to remain niche.

Literally the Oculus quest

>400$
>6DoF tracking, 4 cameras allow much better inside out tracking than Windows Mixed Reality headsets
>IPD slider unlike the Oculus Go
>fan cooled overclocked snapdragon allows for processing power compareable to a Nintendo Switch
>50 launch titles
>curated store so every game must meet 72hz requirements at all times
>no wires or setup required
>no limit on play area size

It doesn‘t require a secondary device, can play games and isn‘t just a porn machine like the Go. It‘s going to be as successful as PSVR without the shit tracking that plagues that thing

You'll be getting a payrise from zuckerberg soon

prove me wrong, you literally cant
its a go with better tracking, real controllers and real games

vr is definitely one of the better boards. main reason i come here is to figure out technology to make quake 1 run better.

>no porn

What is the point of VR?
You can't put yourself into some endless imaginary world, or you'll just run into your walls.
You still have to use joysticks and stuff to interact

It won't go anywhere with games.
And it can't do better than AR for serious stuff.

If you have the neccessary change for a Vive Pro AND a big empty room with a dedicated PC, yes definetly.
Otherwise, meh wait for Quest.

says a faggot who never tried full feature VR.

>just run into your walls.
chaoerone barriers + having a big empty room

>It won't go anywhere with games.
I'll never ever play shooters on a normal pc monitor again. They seem so comically outdated, once you've spend hundets of hours in VR online multiplayer shooters. This is the future.

Don't forget about content outside of games such as CAD (gravity sketch); Google Earth VR (it's breathtaking); movies/web vr content; Bigscreen (2D PC software in VR)

Damn don't have a big empty room sadly.
Maybe when I move

grow up manchild

VR is extremely disappointing, the content isn't there and it's just not that fun

having to whip your neck around to look gets pretty gay

don't waste your money on it unless you're a loserwho wants to spend a lot of time in VR chat aka you're a mmo/second life retard

Go have sex breeder big nerds are talking fuck off

I hate social games.
I love banter so if someone made a game like siege but in vr that would be awesome.
Also there's fuck all vr players in my country so everyone would lag (aus)
Kinda pissed I missed out on the 300usd odessy plus

>Wahoo! Bing! Bing! Yippie!

the thing is that games in VR after the novelty wears off are just not as good as playing it normally

it gets old having to twist your neck quickly to look around instead of just whipping back and forth with the kind of shit you can do with a mouse

2021-2022

Oculus CV2 with varifocal displays, Foveated rendering and 4K per eye should be released by then. Microled should also make things interesting in the next 5 years. VR is at its 2007 iPhone moment right now. It’s showing a lot of potential but the hardware still needs to catch up to the general population expectations.

nah it'll still just be a meme

No. You need fast NVME M.2 drive, 32GB RAM, high mid range 1440p 8GB vRAM GPU, and octa-core processor.

All this will become pretty affordable soon with zen 2/navi and falling SSD/RAM prices tho. It will probably be worth it by 2020 but even then current 1440p VR has screendoor problem that can only be fixed with 4K VR and that requires RTX 2080ti or better levels of perf.

this is such a consumer whore meme, you think the fundamental problem is just upgrading hardware. when the fact is even people with top hardware have their VR sets sitting unused because it's just not that fun. I know because I'm one of them.

Sweet yeah I found fixed focus displays really uncomfortable on my eyes.
Any chance of lighter wireless units? Not talking about stand alone mobile trash tier shit
Any ways sweet I'll be due for a pc upgrade then il just get a entire new system Zen 3 ddr5 Arcturus gpu beast should be cheap too since ram prices are back down to reasonable levels and crypto/Intel's reign of terror is over.
Lso if I got a oled set to tire me over like a odessy plus would it burn in?
>32gb of ram
The fuck for? Already have a 2700x and gtx 1080.
Gonna get a 1080ti cheap used and whack a 3700x in.
Yeah I saw lower res sets anything below 4k that close to my eyes is garbage I used a psvr and 1080-1800p tier shit we have now just isn't enough
You legit moron if anyone said 10 years ago Android/Google would dominate the internet and smartphone market you'd be laughed out just as vr fags are now

If Abrash team nails cheap eye tracking/foveated rendering with Cv2, Quest 2 will be revolutionary. Imagine having the same VR experience as a vive pro whilst being half as expensive, and portable/stand alone too. If Oculus succeeds in conmercialinv their LED eye tribe tracking tech, Quest will be the gameboy of the 2020s.

Surely there is some killer games out there now some of the fps ones look fun.
The fuck it's been almost a decade where are the games?
Wit this isn't even a thing yet? God damn that's dumb I thought eye tracking and foveated rendering was basics

Damn that setup looks annoying without having people to serve you

the problem is that the games are not fun. valve has multiple times fired their VR teams because they can't get past demos. VR is really fun when you're in the novelty phase but once you get into extended use it just becomes annoying to use. the VR revival has been floundering for a decade because of this and people are losing interest. it's a meme. things like smartphones caught on extremely fast because people actually really want them. I know dozens of people IRL who spend $1000 every 1-3 years on a new phone but nobody is throwing that kind of money at VR because people don't actually want it. it's just not that good. everybody who tries my headset says the same thing. they have their minds blown for ~30 minutes and then they literally never want to use it again even though they can't really articulate why. they're just like nah.

Well fuck
So valve dumped vr?
Everyone could have swarn their next big game was gonna be vr exclusive and yet here we are a decade later with ancient demo's
I'll table it again and keep waiting.
Fuck me so glad I missed the first wave of vr in the 50-90s
202x might make another push for it you reckon? Surely 4-8k + hfr 240hz+ stuff will be around by then.
Hopefully gpu prices go down current ones are hilariously op

>BIDEO GAYMS

spam your wojack /v/ shit all you want, vidyagaems is the deciding factor on this market

>vidyagaems is the deciding factor on this market!

valve hasn't dumped VR but they have been pushing it extremely hard and have next to nothing to show for it except demos and half baked shit. if you spend some time googling you can see valve has been trying to make VR work since 2012 and they regularly have firing waves and problems with it, like the lawsuits and them having to forfeit tech multiple times.

the problem with VR isn't that people aren't working on it, tons of money and effort is being sunk into it, it's that it's just not that good. it's fun as novelty but it's not great afterwards. pumping up numbers on various tech won't change that, and a killer game won't change that because the truth is games are better outside of VR.

at this point I honestly don't expect VR to be anything but a novelty and a meme. I see VR as zeppelins. something that is interesting and got a ton of hype but it just doesn't make any fucking sense. the next big thing will be something else entirely.

Every single vr game I've seen are either ports of existing games or glorified tech demos
When there are multiple excellent vr-exclusive titles on the level of like a Half-Life or something like that, it'll be worth getting. I think Valve might put out a game like that, but the question is will that be an industry one-off?

Right now it’s a Beat Saber machine.

idk if it's a "good time" but got myself an oculus dk2 for 80$ off craigslist. I play assetto corsa in VR from time to time with my 20$ driving force GT and it's pretty good desu.

How well do VR games/apps/etc work in linux? Honest question.

Shit like Rec Room or Pavlov is fucking awesome.
Of course it's not AAA-tier but it's still great.
Just give it a fair try first.

400$ DRM machine, more expensive than a console when most people interested in VR already have a console or a gaymen PC.
Also, no porn.

My Odyssey+ arrives in a few hours anons. It feels like waiting for Christmas as a child.

>processing power compareable to a Nintendo Switch
Fucking christ user, it's not even as powerful as a switch?
I'm a dev who works with the fucking thing, it's commodity hardware, it's not designed to be high end. It can hardly render 720p at 30fps, let alone 2x 2400x2400 screens or whatever at 120fps, fuck me ducking dead these games will look like shit
I already thought inside-out tracking was infantile and trash, but to be so fucking underpowered as well, shit man

you'll have a fun few days
can you return it after that? it's hard to sell but if you can just return it you'll be fine.

Yeah 30 day return policy from the Microsoft store. It was on sale for $200CAD off and I figured if something cool is announced at GDC, like the Valve HMD, I can just get it instead. At least this way I can test my VR legs and motion sickness with no issue.

make sure you return it before you miss the window. or you'll regret not having the money. but enjoy the first time fun.

Yeah, I contacted the Microsoft store and they confirmed the 30 day windows starts at the delivery date so I should be good. I have their email transcript anyways.

what makes you say no porn? It will have a video app and allows apk sideloading for porn apps

It‘s pretty much on par with a switch.
Also it has already proven to be a capable machine with media praising it at the oculus event.
If a game can run 1080p and 60 fps vidya on switch, you can make simple looking games on the quests native res and 72hz.

If it has late PS2 era graphics in VR thats fine by me. I’d rather have this be a successful machine with competent devs making mobile graphics VR games than all the shovelware on the steam store because no developer takes PCVR seriously.

I thought it was going to have its own walled garden within the Google Play store, similar to how Samsung has their own ecosystem.

It will, but you could sideload apks on the Oculus Go fairly easily by pretending to be a developer, which only requires you to input any name on the oculus website, and you‘re accepted. it‘s a short,

No. Waste of money. VR is too much of a niche to ever kickoff. It's very Gimmicky.
By the time VR is economically viable for the common person, there will be something better to replace it. Even at this point, VR is not that desired that even if a miracle happened right now and it was cheap has consoles or laptops became, people wouldn't be interested. Why? It's cumbersome to setup, entertainment possibility is limited due to controls and room limitations and there's a negative stigma associated with VR as it's quite anti-social (meaning chad will probably bully you if you walk around with a VR or mix relativity headset as MS is advertising).
