I just assume it auto backups like all office programs. I haven't lost a document to libreoffice but definitely did to open office. If I was using windows I'd be fine with Word 2000, that shit did everything except word count

How good it handles word files?

Extremely good. I've used both Libre and WPS. I prefer LibreOffice overall but WPS is like a word copy, you won't notice any difference opening a word file on it or with microsoft word.
