>his hosts file isn't 36.2 megabytes

It's like you HATE privacy.

bloat.

might be easier to just have a firewall..

bloat

This is the firewall
Jealous windows users. Hosts file >1mb makes the OS unusable.

Just use Steven black hosts no need for all this t b h

i updated my host files from 5 to 30 and suddenly every site would just keep on loading forever, and a DNS process would eat up like 20-30 percent of my i5 6400. i have same host file on my sd 636 phone running fine tho! any helpp

I am. I'm using steven black's complete + addons and energized ultra + addons. Ran all through a unique domain filter to reduce it to this filesize, all unique hosts.

That's .. not .. how firewalls ..
okay
Anyway, mine's about 7mb.

Yeah you're a windows user. Try disabling dnscache with autoruns64.exe. There are instructions on mvp's hosts website.
Not worth it tho - slowdown is proportional to filesize. Linux distros (android incl.) have no such problem.
Okay wiseguy what's a better way to do it?

"It"? The two are not even equatable, firewalls do a lot more than just blocking hosts. You need both.

So what's the alternative in windows? How do I block all this shit without horrible CPU usage.

oh k mister thanks for the tips

mine is aggregated from the major ones and is 1.2

Not bloat if you disable dnscache service on windows
In linux or android no problem
I am the sameway

Here's another tip *udicks dick*

Install Gentoo.
I don't know, I haven't used Windows in years.

>disable dnscache service
i jus did that and wow its still slow af fuck

>lagging your system with a 32MiB hosts file when pihole exists
It's like you hate having a brain.

>crappy slow overpriced device with its own OS bringing latency in the chain
It's like having a pi but much better

Then stop using wangblows faggot
I tried it on my gayming pc works fine

FUCK OFF HOW DO I MAKE IT WORK

>>lagging your system with a 32MiB hosts file
have you tried not using moronically designed operating systems?

Look here winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm

guys whys windows so slow tho

You are never even going to encounter 99.999% of the hosts in these files unless you just spend all your time clicking through random Facebook ads...
Lookin' at you, grandma.

Disable IPv6, no sense dealing with two protocols.
Do your host entries begin with 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0? Make sure they're 0.0.0.0.

Attached: file.png (181x18, 536)

Yeah all of them are converted to 0.0.0.0
Should I disable ipv6 on my phone? Why tho?

Why would I use this instead of firewall+iptables+uBlockOrigin

I dunno. Why would I use that instead of a hosts file?

Because all that does is statically block a list of hosts...
Do you really think that's all there is to browsing securely?

My 25mb host file on android makes everything much slower though.

Why not just use both? It's not like there's any real drawback to using the host file in addition to everything else.

No, I also run without javascript. What are the advantages to yoru setup

windows automatically reverted my hosts file AGAIN

Attached: 1531545274409.png (593x635, 210K)

It's faster for me no ads
I'm using steven black hosts file with adaway with magisk systemless hosts file

I use a hosts file, hardware firewall, local firewall, uBlock/uMatrix/ScriptSafe in Ungoogled Chromium with canvas deception enabled, dnscrypt with ephemeral keys, yadda yadda blah blah blah yackety schmackety, doesn't really affect my latency at all. Far more effective for having control than just a regular ol' hosts file.
>i use gentoo btw

I still don't see how that's any safer than hosts and no js

Crippling software botnet does nothing to hardware botnet.

>he's too much of a brainlet to run dnsmasq

hardware botnet is zero-overhead

Because a hosts file is bloat unless you're using your PC as a hotspot.

Then I can't help you, I give up.

Attached: 1546048252279.jpg (393x233, 22K)

mebibytes, not megatbytes

It's defiantly megabybes, linux does math wrong.

Nigga do you even know what that word means?

amending your hosts file is basically building the wall of Jericho. The only people getting past it are jews

How the fuck is a text file that stops ads from loading bloat?

why do people only use a hosts file on a single computer instead of for their whole network?

Attached: pfsense.png (1243x1056, 124K)

>Doesn't use DoT
OP confirmed boomer fag

Attached: images (1).jpg (499x499, 23K)

Because it doesn't stop ads from loading if they're injected with JavaScript. uBlockOrigin is just superior and since it already does exactly the same shit + more that's why a hosts file is bloat.

>browsers are the only things that connect to the internet
I use ubo too because I can whitelist js per domain but blocking from your router is also useful to stop trackers/ads/malware on any device system wide. You are ignorant if you think otherwise.

And ublock origin only works in that one browser in that one operating system in that one computer. No problem for trash apps to infect you.

>not having a DNS server
HAHAHAHAHAHA

How many duplicate hosts?

>Okay wiseguy what's a better way to do it?
Running a local DNS server and blocking them there. Redirecting all your network over that DNS server.

It doesn't matter what devices or OS you use, it's network wide.
Jesus, do people even know basic shit here?

Attached: file.png (377x516, 15K)

How the fuck

> his OS looks through 36 MB of hostnames before every resolve
It should be slower, even with FS cache.

>bloated hosts file
>disabling dnscache
no need, just use a pihole or whatever that does the same function

But addons that eat cpu and ram aren't?

I assume people on Jow Forums aren't retarded enough to use malware apps which shove ads to your actual system. Even if you are dumb enough to use a malicious app why the fuck don't you just use iptables to deny it networking?
>on any device system wide
piHole / Android or GNU + hotspot or VPN Hotspot
Those eliminate the need of a hosts file outside of that ONE device with the purpose of domain blocking.

I really hope your trolling that your believe a specific list of blacklisted hosts in your hosts file + disabling JavaScript >= firewall

Set up a DNS sinkhole you literal tard

But Pihole uses dnsmasq with an interface to track request and add/remove locally or remotely with ease.

>I assume people on Jow Forums aren't retarded enough to use malware apps
First, you're dumb for assuming that. Second, you're showing your ignorance again thinking "common sense" is an alternative to a solution like unbound. You have no idea what OPSEC is about.

I use pfSense with pfBlockerNG. Better than a pihole on shit hardware.

Privacyfags BTFO

He thinks everything is better if you need a terminal to use it. Probably uses Arch with DWM or something stupid.

Zero

I don't have a static IP.
It's all in RAM and it uses hash maps.

Because my android isn't rooted and all the good apps are proprietary. Also I'm not introducing amazing latency and making my own server.

I feel like I'm not doing it right desu

Attached: 2019-03-16-191653_378x50_scrot.png (378x50, 5K)

>I don't have a static IP.
How is this related IN ANY WAY?

ignore the reatards
people here are even too dumb to set up soi shit like piholes

How would i make a server if I cant address it??

How many entries?
Do you also block porn?

>local DNS server
>local
Does your internal address keep changing too?

Jesus Christ, imagine being so clueless about networks.

>It's like you HATE privacy.
As much as I hate the Pi shit, even a Pi-Hole would be better a this point.

Approx 1.3 million entries. Yes I block ads, trackers, porn, gambling, social, etc.
Yes I think so.
Well I never studied networking. And why would I, I just solved a problem without it

>Yes I think so.

Well my router says my PC is sometimes 192.168.1.3 and sometimes 192.168.1.4 and so on

You can set specific IP addresses for devices on your own network. This is a none issue.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\
edit \hosts\ with an elevated notepad

>Approx 1.3 million entries. Yes I block ads, trackers, porn, gambling, social, etc.

Energized Porn Lite Blocking.

Rule Count: 1,152,434

see

>Well I never studied networking. And why would I, I just solved a problem without it
Me neither, but I still can do things more efficiently.

>elevated notepad
I'm quite short, could you help me reach it?

>Well I never studied networking. And why would I, I just solved a problem without it
Than don't try to teach others if you have no clue yourself.
This isn't even something you'd have to study, but being able to learn yourself looking things online would have given you much better results.

>believing some bloated file will in any way protect his privacy

Attached: pep.jpg (363x550, 23K)

>Yes I block ... porn

Attached: varg thumbs up.jpg (410x368, 26K)

I get being a schizo but now you're just wasting your time.

>doesn't think blocking trackers helps protect privacy

t. corporate shill against people blocking ads and trackers on all internet connected devices

why this newfags keep saying its bloated file
stop using windows niggers
>muh.. bloated file

Attached: 1552763617846.png (372x395, 16K)

>android isn't rooted
Why the fuck

post host file for windows

My hosts file is only 445 kilobytes.
Am I gonna make it guys?

there's literally nothing stopping the ad men from spinning up new subdomains faster than you fags can block them

we'll be waiting :)

Hosts is infinitely faster than ubo
