I've heard the X220 keyboard mod needs a firmware flash for the keyboard layout to fully work, is this true?
This BIOS is unironically what I'm most concerned about, but I hear that it's possible to flash a custom BIOS which removes the whitelisting BS.
Either that or I'll just have to stick to official Lenovo(TM) parts, but that shouldn't be an issue aside from battery replacements.

You need to do an EC flash to get the full layout to work but it's not that hard. There's a bunch of guides on it.
You can remove the battery whitelist at the same time since that's also just an EC flash. But to remove the wifi whitelist you have to flash coreboot but I think you would have to do that on a X220 as well

nah you jsut flash ec firmware. it's a bottable thing that will jsut isntall. swapping the keyboard take like 2 minutes

Not really, the most dangerous part is flashing the EC since if something goes wrong you could potentially brick your laptop but nothing will go wrong so don't let that scare you.

No love for the SL series? I mean, I know they're not that great, but look at this sexy thicc boi. It's pretty snappy for a ten year old laptop, P8400 can handle my shitposting/hentai/touhou games surprisingly well. I'll add an SSD and replace battery soon. I've read that the keyboard on this thing is not as good as it's predecessors, but hey, at least it's not chiclet. The only things that really taint this beauty is the non removable DVD drive and the glossy 1366x768 panel, especially the latter, since not only resolution sucks, it's also VERY reflexive. Not sure if I can change/mod the screen, but it's okay, I'm too lazy to do it anyways.

I still don't get how one should position their hands over keyboard to comfortably use the nipple.

Index finger on nipple and thumb on the track buttons, disabling the trackpads' mouse input also helps a lot with accuracy.

I believe I've found a source for new, genuine batteries for a much lower price than the Lenovo website. If you go to lenovo.encompass.com, and have your model number ready, the prices are awesome. I found a 9 cell for my X220 for 65 bucks, as opposed the the 100+ they want on the Lenovo website. Apparently encompass is an official distributor of Lenvovo parts.

Does anyone know how to fix LVDS output for Ivy Bridge CPUs in Sandy Bridge ThinkPads? The CPU seems to run fine (but hot) and VGA output works just fine.

Yeah, they are pretty good for that stuff. I mentioned the site here a few threads back. The downside is if you live outside of the US you have to purchase $200 USD worth of stuff for them to ship it to you.

I only really wanted a battery from them, so I was out of luck. I managed to find a guy on eBay that sells (what appears to be) a genuine battery for my W520, so I went with that. If I lived in the states or was ordering a lot of parts I would just do it through encompass, as it saves the fucking around trying to find non chink scam shit on eBay.

Except that everything after the T440p has a soldered CPU also, and the the X series do too have a magnesium roll cage, I replaced it in my X220 like 6 months ago. Besides, why does the soldered CPU even really matter all that much? Nobody is going to be using an X series for anything that requires all that much power anyway, which is evident in that fact that there are almost no i7 X220's around because nobody ordered them.

I would not follow what the other user said. Definitely get a used one, there is absolutely no reason to spend the money on a new machine. I'd get a 50 series, at the newest. Depending on what you're looking for, there are plenty of options. Small and light? X250, X240, X230. Even smaller? X1 Carbon. Standard 14 inch? T4x0 series. 15 inch? T5x0 series. What are you planning on doing with it? The two areas I'd put the most money in to are the screen, because the 1080p panel is definitely worth it, and the battery, because having a laptop with an old shitty battery sucks. I personally think that the best value is a T440p, since you can upgrade the CPU, the 1080p panel is really good, and they are several years old now, so they can be had for quite a good price. I used one for my first two years of my Computer Science degree and found it to be an awesome machine. Don't fall for the meme about the 40 series having the bad trackpad, it's definitely not perfect, but it's entirely usable, and it can be replaced with one from a T450 for like 10 bucks if you hate it that much. The 15 inch version if you'd prefer the larger display is the T540p, and the same applies to it.

I don't think much can be done because of the hinge design on the T model. I know my X220 has a pretty sturdy screen though.
