Take a look at Thinkpad X1 Carbon if you want a MacBook that isn't shite, but if you're going for a non-meme degree (STEM/anything involving data analysis or rendering) then get a used T4xx series ThinkPad. It's sleek, you can chuck an SSD in one, easily get a new battery, and the build quality is good enough that you won't break it if you were to drop it accidentally.
I use a Thinkpad T440, got it for $170, and an SSD for another $120. Put the rest of the money in a savings account or something.
