So how goes the job search, user?

Craigslist was awesome for a first job, once I had a year of something it was easier.

Also you probably are doing something dumb on your resume or like a lot of people forgetting their email icon is some dumb meme

I got a shitty contract position that pays me 25 $CAD an hour. Looking for something better but not hearing back from anyone.

Ive got a degree in physics graduated in Dec. Looking for a software Dev position.

$25/hr is not teeeerrible though. It's a good start.

>went to a job interview for a sweatshop software place
>this was the only company that didn't reject me on the phone screen after applying to 50 companies
>interview email included a takehome programming challenge (fizzbuzz) and said to bring your laptop to the interview
>there's 40 other people there
>10 have macbooks
>20 others have poverty walmart shittops
>10 didn't bring one
>i have a thinkpad
>hiring guy comes to greet us
>1st guy with macbook gets called in
>then the next guy
>notice it's only macfags being called
>realize i'm not getting called after 3 hours of waiting
>some guys realized the same thing and walked out
>hiring guy comes out after the last macbook guy went in and tells us we're free to go

>*unzips* work on this, faggot.

Hm, I actually have a Macbook. Although it's my secondary computer (for when I NEED to use XCode) but this might push me to bring this instead of my usual Win10 laptop in such a situation.

In seattle it is. you can make 25 / hr moving fucking boxes at the amazon warehouse

>not realizing cost of living doesn't revolve around where you are

I don't live in a high COL location though.

Pay is fine, the problem is its a startup with 6 employees including me and I'm the only software Dev.

>wanting to join homosexual party
They probably used their dicks as swords too. Parrying each other's sword with giggles
And if your sword breaks, you have to larp as sheath for every sword in game

>realize i'm not getting called after 3 hours of waiting
Jesus, what a fucking waste of time
>hiring people based on their computer
You dodged a bullet

Three months now, fresh out of uni, I wonder if I should just give up and apply to the total slavery jobs.
Currently working just one hour a day unloading trucks and getting what would be 18 USD, 0 stress. A developer works 9 hours a day at 19 UDS/hour, and you have to be ready to work more hours or go on weekends with no extra pay if shit happens.

Though you realize how much freedom you're given. In a month, threaten leaving unless you get a raise.

>be bitch delivery driver
>they make me unload the truck and break down pallets instead of hiring lumpers
>thankfully it's only 1 hour out of my whole workday
imagine having to do that your whole workday, breaking your back for 18 bucks an hour, that's kill yourself-tier

If you're not getting any callbacks, you don't have enough experience on your resume. No one wants to hire a programmer who has only done classwork.

You should work on a project that you can put on your resume. It doesn't have to be complex, just something that shows potential employers you actually know how to code.

I had the same problem. It took me over three years to get a programming job, and I had to go through a contracting agency to get it. When you have no experience, a contracting agency will have you do a coding assessment and then advocate to employers for you, and they have more leverage than you do. I've worked with TEKsystems and Aerotek and they're both okay.

Contracting jobs aren't the best, but the pay is usually pretty good and they'll get you the experience you need to find something better.

>imagine having to do that your whole workday
It is just taking a bunch of boxes and leaving them inside the shop, unironically, sounds better than doing webdev shit and having to work basically for free if someone else does some stupid shit.
At least I get some money and have time for personal projects.

If you are ever looking for a job for more than 2 weeks then you should seriously reevaluate your life and go back to school

200? try 500.

still nothing, bro.

Put a womans name on your cv next time

I turned in a resume on Wednesday. I thought I would get called because my friends was going to put in a good word for me. All I’ve gotten is crickets. Am I just being naive thinking I would get hired like this?9

The people who do the hiring are the same people who you'll be working with if you actually get the job. This means they already have stuff they're working on at the company WHILE attending to job applications. People get busy at jobs, it happens.

I'm not saying the waiting game doesn't suck, it sucks hard balls. At least you got a connection in.

You were supposed to bribe HR with dinners and parties and escorts.

Actually it’s not a friend. It’s my uncle but he adopted me so it’s like I am his son. He has been working in the industry for 20 years so he told me he would talk to the hiring person. The person just told me to give him an application but I haven’t heard back. Feels bad because this would be my first real job making 70k which may not be a lot compared to what I see others making here but for me a huge deal since I make 17hr right now

>fslling for the kode meme.

You had it coming, my ex-buzzfeed 'journalist' friend.

Lol ur forever a neet.

There must be a problem with your resume. Get it reviewed on Jow Forumscscareerquestions

It's not unusual at all to go weeks without hearing anything. Just don't put all your eggs in one basket. Keep applying to other jobs.

My company hires in Seattle.

I'll take it if you're serious about hiring, got an email I can fire a resume?

Are you retarded or have a criminal record? I got a comfy sysadmin job after sending out 10 applications

You guys make software sound like a nightmare fucking hellscape. Why does everyone want to code so badly? There's fuckloads of cool tech careers out there.
>T. Electromechanical student

>t. blue collar retard

Do you know Java? That's the requirement. And you need to be a us citizen or green card.

[email protected]

Yeah, that's my point. A lot of people itt are coming across as deeply uncomfortable with a white collar, highly saturated field.

it's still better than destroying your body and getting mesothelioma from 30 years of being exposed to asbestos or some shit yet to be discovered.

>
>it's still better than destroying your body and getting mesothelioma from 30 years of being exposed to asbestos or some shit yet to be discovered.

Sure, being unemployed 27 out of those 30 years sounds better.

I hope that you at least look good dressed as a woman, because only taking dick you will avoid the hobo life.

Isn't Java like the first thing all university coders learn?

Yes it's a common language. Especially for web apps and infrastructure.

I sent out about 200 job applications too, no internships with a pretty good gpa from a pretty good school. I'm also a former criminal, so that made it tougher. I got one shitty offer that got rescinded because of my criminal past. I accepted a decent job and passed their background check. I am currently in the background check phase at another job with a very good offer, but I do not expect to pass the background check. So, could be worse could be better. I'm also no longer living a life of crime, so that's a good thing.

Sure, we believe you Tyrone.

200? I'm heavily involved in technical recruiting at "large company you've heard of ™". Share your anonymized resume so I can tell you what you're doing wrong.

Is it true you only look at 20 applicants and auto-delete the rest?
I would do the same thing, fuck sifting through 5000 applications for every available opening.

No, they aren't deleted. If you're resume isn't god awful you will likely eventually get a callback (maybe years later.)
I'm not front-line hiring, so I don't do the sifting. I only get the resumes that have already passed QC, so I know what to look for.

>maybe years later
what makes you think they'll still be on the job years down the road, that's so fucking stupid

*job market

Not really, if you look like a fine candidate but you need a few more years of work experience you will get the callback once you have the experience.

$22 is slightly above average in Canada for a developer you retard.

- If that large black block is your address, remove it unless you are applying locally.
- Work experience first, educations == skills, then extras (do you have side projects? github? website?)
- Instead of just putting bullet points, write things you learned and how you applied them towards specific projects.
- Design could be much better, just google "good looking resumes" and copy something you like

Why exactly remove the address if the job isn't local? I mean it seems like it'd be understood relocation is a must if the job isn't local, no?

Is it really true people will just let themselves be poached by companies that interview/hire years after applying and they simply ghost their current employer by no longer showing up and ignoring all phone calls?

Also is it true applying to places multiple times gets you on a blacklist?
Do companies' HR depts pass around blacklists of problem applicants?

Also JSON isn't a "language" per-say, it's a data format. That's like putting XML under languages you know. I'd remove that and put another bullet points for any frameworks you might have used: (spring, .net, django, react, etc)

It's basically just useless information taking up precious space on a one page resume. Use that space for something else that the recruiter cares about knowing.

How do I pare down things I did at current job for resume?

>tester for 2 years
>"self-employed"
I'd take that job for $25/hr if I were you, you don't have the experience to get a better wage, especially in Canada.

There are blacklists and they are scary. I don't have any advice on how to avoid them.
No I don't think big companies share their lists though.

I'm not that $25/hr guy. And quite frankly I'd take it at this point for the time being till something else lands.

The self employment thing failed, plain and simple. Which is why I'm hauling my ass back to the job market.

It really does revolve around one's costs of living somewhere.

Retard

Try to only include things you are really proud of that you did at your current position. Like solving a certain problem or implementing a tricky feature, whatever. Try not to just list menial things that most any modern programming job already expects of you. (did unit testing, wrote automation scripts, implemented basic features, etc)

Post your GitHub and your hourly rate

Attached: 1553032852355m.jpg (1024x1024, 232K)

I’ve heard companies like it when you quantify shit. So for example since I work as an IT work study at a uni I have something along the lines of
>Support virtual security protocols for a university of 15k+ students

instead of just

>Updated virtual security protocols for the campus network

Hm, that's a good point actually. Yeah now that I think about it I should briefly touch on what each company does in the resume so they have a taste of what I did before I hit an interview.

>quantify shit
aka delivered results e.g. "increased conversation by 22% in 3 months". In coding code quality is more important tho. So providing GitHub would be more effective than a CV that everybody knows are mostly sugar coated lies

*Conversion

here make sure to watch and apply this m.youtube.com/watch?v=2PFYZde5SPk

Yeah what this user said, although from the interviewers ive talked to: they may or may not skim through your git/portfolio. I would still recommend to have at least some small worthwhile projects on it though

Quantify and state what the effects of said work did:
Improved (device)'s battery lifespan by 16% by using the 12C protocol to implement a device driver and create a low-power state.

Developed iOS application using Swift and Objective C that allows users to easily encrypt files in local storage.

Stick to that kind of format, A using B to accomplish C or A using B to accomplish C which lead to D

I got a comfy it support job in a school, I’m only in 2 and a half days a week and get paid a full weeks wage, so I can’t complain too much.

Is there a ballpark number of items to include? This is from first job after school. I have multiple things that more than just generic average stuff.

If you're going to include a description of what the company does make it incredibly brief, generally your resume should paint a good picture of what a company does just through listing your accomplishments and responsibilities.

How many are we talking? If it's your first job you can get away with listing a decent amount, but in general you should list the 5 most critical accomplishments, your job title should give people a good idea of everything else you did.

lul u gotta be minority or disabled honey

you have to go straight to the engineering team
(many ways to reach out over time by showing interest in what they're doing or writing about publicly) and ideally let them refer you.
HR dgaf about code. That's why their pass through rate is so low. You have to get people who actually care about this to see that you actually care about this to refer you to people who also believe that you actually care about this to get a chance to show that you actually care about this.
The best way if they come to you though which can be accomplished through inbound marketing e.g. writing your own blog, youtube channel and reaching out to the engineering team by leaving comments on their blog ideally with a dirct link to your blog/yt/github.

Attached: sales-funnel-infographic-vector-10861368.jpg (1000x1080, 161K)

My job title is just software developer...

If you developed any software list it like this:
Developed (os) (software) using (primary languages) which allowed users to (overarching software function)

Underneath the software list specific accomplishments, example:
Integrated openCV allowing users to effortlessly apply photo filters and effects.
Incorporated persistent data storage to archive photos. Leveraged caching for recently accessed photos.
Designed RESTful backend server enabling photos to be stored persistently in an online database.
Debugged software using (debugging tools)
Documented software using (documentation tools)

Underneath that list the knowledge you leveraged:
Leveraged knowledge in Full Stack Web Development, JavaScript and Git.

Quantify where applicable, keep things concise, don't tell them basic shit like you operated printers. You shouldn't have more than 10 bullet points.

>tfw 29 and no work experience

it's over for me

Do you have a degree?

based faggot

CompSci.

Just apply to shit that requires work experience anyway, I've gotten plenty of interviews for jobs that said you need 4 years of experience using Java, C, Python, Go etc and still got an interview and in some cases a job even though I had none of that.

If you haven't already list your coursework under your as well under your education in your resume, example:

CS Coursework: Algorithms & Data Structures, Operating Systems, Networks, Computer Vision
EE Coursework: Embedded Systems, IoT, Computer Arch, Circuits, Logic Design, VLSI Design, Signal Processing

And keep your resume to 1 (one) page. On average recruiters look at a resume for only a few seconds, no one is going to go through a multi-page resume.

tyvm

you think that's bad.
There's a tech company I applied for that asks what web browser and email service you use and why.
The answer to both is Google (chrome/gmail) because the owner and CEO thinks they're the best.
It doesn't matter if you argue your skew of firefox has better addons for power users, it doesn't matter if your email domain is more private.
The CEO feels that chrome and gmail are for REAL techies that are constantly online.
I'm not even joking.

Attached: 1527645774609.gif (500x493, 631K)

If you have any personal projects you've worked on you can list those as well, during the interview process I end up discussing my personal projects more than my actual work projects. It also shows you have initiative, which any recruiter will like.

I'll do that. I've been trying to work on some projects to show that I at least know something.

Thanks.

How big is this company lol?
Must be some garbage shit.

say you use both and have multiple emails on multiple platforms

>urgh dude nepotism is so wrong, the position should be filled based on merit
>what do you mean you've been out of work for over a year after graduation? why didn't you network?

Random thoughts:

1) I don't know how you make it to age 27 without ever working (thread too long) but in most states in the USA, and probably canada, you can't ask an interviewee his/her age. I'd just fucking lie about the graduation date and make it look like you're 22. Unless it's a government job or a foreign employer I doubt they'd verify. Yes, it'd be grounds for firing you, but do whatever it takes.

2) Learn bottom-of-the-barrel web development. I'm talking wordpress, PHP, slapping together landing pages in bootstrap, basic javascript. Demand for those will never die because of the amount of preexisting tools and libs on those platforms. Yes, you'd be competing with paki's -- but that's better than competing with new grads from decent schools (I'm assuming you went to a shit school).

>I don't know how you make it to age 27 without ever working
it's pretty easy when your parents don't make you work and your outgoing expenses are zero

this, I don't live in America so I got gibs while studying and saved most of it

I have a degree in Electrical Engineering but I don't like Electrical Engineering. A family friend is offering me a job (60k starting) where I write code for his small business. I would need to code a website, android app, and iOS app. I have no experience in iOS but code is all the same so whatever. No benefits (no 401k, insurance, etc) but I have no superior and my hours are flexible - literally work whenever I want and just get my shit done. Should I take this job or find a real job? I would basically be his codemonkey/tech guy

>australia
>finished uni (but not graduated yet, ceremony in a few months)
>sent out 2 applications
>2 offers
>update linked in
>poach emails every day
>get interview for dream job (pentester) a week later

this is for php dev btw
should move countries
ive had 3 jobs in my life and have only ever sent out 3 resumes

Take it, being able to dictate your own schedule is worth it even without benefits

What type of salary should I ask for if I'm doing Python (websites/backend), Android, iOS, and other non programming related things like systems admin work? I start at 60k but he said we will negotiate salary again after 3 months. I have literally no experience but he also has no idea about anything tech related so he wouldn't know what a "fair" salary is

That's already a more than fair salary if you don't have experience. Entry salary in IT regardless of position is generally 45k-52k. Don't cut yourself out of the 60k though, you're going to be managing the project alone so the extra money makes up for it.
