Why not, they're amazing laptops at affordable prices. I'm posting from my x230 right now and I dock it and use it as a full desktop build.
Everything from the SSD, battery, charger, docking station, laptop, 1080p screen, mechanical keyboard, etc was about $400 and it's a full laptop and desktop of great quality.

acer's are probably the most sensible laptop for the price. dell's are nice, too, but seem to be more expensive. memepads are junk, although the red nipple thing is better than any touchpad i've ever used.

x220 because it's the last one with the old keyboard and super cheap.
You should pay $100-200 for one. (for $200, it should have SSD). Add a SSD($60) and new battery if you want good battery life ($50-100)
x230 for slightly more if you want slightly better CPU. Do the x220 keyboard mod.
x240 sucks ass
x250 if you want newer specs, including CPU (broadwell is close to kaby lake), screen, dual batteries, 4g etc. Got mine for $300 with good batteries.
e485 if you want really new ($700), ryzen APU
I don't like the 14" models because you mostly just get a bigger screen and more bulk, but the same advice goes for them.
