Gentoo

arch

Diebian

void

Gentoo for laptops, FreeBSD for desktops

kde de on your preffered distro

>Gentoo for laptops
That's the way if you want to spend half of your life compiling packages

desktop is fairly recent hardware (i think)

hardware:
i7-2600K @ 3.40GHz
32 gb o' ram
geforce gtx 1070
was a gift from friend who's upgrading...

correct me if I'm wrong but isn't BSD bad on new hardware?

It worked just fine when I built it with new-at-the-time hardware

Windows 7

Gentoo is fine, but I figure if you have to ask you want one of the other two.

Gentoo or Artix depending on what you want. Void is better than Artix in theory but in practice it has some issues that make it a worse choice.

I'm on arch rn, what's so great about gentoo?

>it has some issues that make it a worse choice
what are they?

Windows 10

I've used arch for about 8 months, although I've tried void for about a month and gentoo for a few weeks. Basically just waiting for someone to respond with a sound enough argument to dissuade me of arch or persuade me of gentoo.

pacman>>>portage>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>xbps

nothing.

Use distcc if you have a slow laptop.

Gentoo is superior. Bigger community, more support.

bump

>kde de
is that a meme like rip in peace?

not Arch i guess
depends on how much time you got and how much experience you have. void can be reinstalled in a few minutes if you fuck up badly, gentoo is more stable.

It used to have the best wiki, that's about it.

I find Richard Stallman looking at me in disapproval when I masturbate to be very arousing.

Arch is the least autistic
Still autistic though

>but muh control

>do you have time to waste installing everything
gentoo
>do you have time to waste after the install fixing shit
arch

Arch uses systemd, that automatically eliminates it.

imagine being the edgy teenager who made this

>Use distcc if you have a slow laptop.
Didn't that this existed. Now I'll proceed to install Gentoo on my laptop.

Technically they made KDE not stand for anything anymore since it refers to the entire suite of software, KDE Plasma is what they call the desktop environment. Kinda retarded tho

void or lfs. the gentoo package manager does not let you manage everything.

Eh? What does the gentoo package manager not let you manage?

Gentoo > Void >>>>>>> Windows > Arch

>the gentoo package manager does not let you manage everything.
care to elaborate?

Lack of packages is the main one. All the way from obscure programming tools to desktop environments. Some packages are also poorly optimized and run like shit.

Hey voidfags, where's the cuda package?

You can customize absolutely everything to an autistic level of detail. For instance on all distros I know, android-file-transfer comes with a Qt5 GUI. On Gentoo you can disable that and have only the CLI tools. Another example is you can install mesa with only the video drivers for your particular graphics card, rather than all of them for most distros. You can also compile packages with optimizations specific to your CPU.
Bullshit, Portage is Gentoo's biggest flaw. The Portage tree is like 4 GB and hundreds of thousands of files which is a massive inode sink. It also takes forever to sync, whereas pacman and xbps do it in 5 seconds. It's written in Python so just running a command takes longer than the other two, and it's slower overall, resolving dependencies takes much longer for instance.

you are right, fuck. they could at least search a new meaning for KDE

on some packages it pulls in bloat and has no use flag that turns it off. it can still be compiled without the bloat by downloading the source and configuring & compiling it yourself or if you make new portage files for it but thats much harder than just configuring and compiling it.

>volunteering to be part of the botnet
you're asking for it

ok, am install gendoo
wish me luck bros

is it worth doing hardened install?

comparing to AUR every distribution but arch has this problem
