Technology After 2012

Is anyone else becoming disinterested in modern technology? Since roughly 2012 it feels like all the manufacturers made some pact to ruin all their hardware and software together.

I know new thing bad, old thing good is a trope among enthusiasts anywhere - but it's almost unignorable. I'm sitting here with a T520 from 2011. Just upgraded my Nexus 5 to a Moto G7, and despite all the specs being better - I regret it.

I look at the newer ThinkPads, they're nice. But they're not 20 series nice. Even Apple has fallen off lately - set aside what you will of MacBooks: look at the 2014 model and then look at the 2016 model. It's the same story: better specs, worse product

Am I schitzophrenic or is this actually happening?

Attached: Screenshot_20190330-052750.png (760x759, 544K)

That model on the right looks like an X1 carbon or something else out of that line. Not all of them are like that. For example, most of the T line and all of the P line are still THICC

yes

Apple has legitimately gotten better, that's only because they used to be so bad

Yes. Besides SSDs all hardware I own was made before 2014. All modern hardware is trash. PCs, tablets, laptops, cell phones, everything made today is just trash.

>another boomer reminiscing thread

I want to go back, Nexus 5 battery was almost defectively bad even back then - so maybe an old Moto X?

It's depressing to know I'll probably end up like some Richard Stallman type. Running 2011 hardware in 2025. But I just don't see myself jumping further unless something changes.

It's tough seeing everyone suddenly love the T440 / T450 series over at tpg too. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it's better.

>I liked X, so Y is inherently worse
I understand the appeal of something like a T420 or a X230 with 220 keyboard and I thought about tinkering with one as well (and I would've if shit wasn't so expensive in Europe), but in what way is a unmodified X220/230 better than for example a X270?
Battery life is ass, screen is ass, ports are old and slow. Only good thing is the keyboard, but who cares when on the go any shit keyboard is enough and everybody should have a nice keyboard connected to their dockingstation for serious work at home anyway.

Old Android phones were absolute trash. What was the Nexus 5 able to do that a Pocophone can't?

That's because normies buy magical facebook boxes, not fully fledged tools they know how to use.

There's still some niche hardware and tech, but it caters to specialists in their fields. Also there are fewer producers of hardware - now majority people use realtek integrated sound chips, DOS games had whole list of extension cards to choose from. Also no more VIA (or any other forgotten manufacturer) desktop CPUs in the west anymore.

what is a good laptop for $1000 these days?

Or should I try find something used?

I dropped 1.3k on my Elitebook x360 1020 and I'd honestly not recommend something as expensive. Got my sister a "used" X270 for christmas, which was like 500 bucks and apart from the missing digitizer I'd honestly prefer it.
Just got some T450s at work and I got to say, for 300 eurobucks it's absolutely fantastic. Good screen (the 1080p one), great connectivity, the powerbridge feature is really nice and it's powerful enough to do everyday work.

I've been disinterested for years and I fear the day any crucial hardware of mine breaks.

>I'm sitting here with a T520 from 2011. Just upgraded my Nexus 5 to a Moto G7
Quite literally me my man.
I love my T520 and see no reason to ever change it.
And I just got a Galaxy S7 because my Nexus 5 got destroyed recently. I really miss my Nexus 5, the format was perfect and my S7 doesn't feel any much better really.

Hardware on laptops has halted while on desktop its accelerating

Start hoarding tech. Buy used tech in good condition when you can. Fill up a closet with spares and you'll be set for life.

Yeah I should have done it a long time ago. CPUs are easier to come by but the motherboards which support the socket are less so.

Not really. What little progress there has been as of late only effects a tiny minority. Software and games have been shit for over a decade anyway. Any progress of tech on PCs is a waste.

This is very true of mobos. Gotta buy early when they are getting closed out. Once they become a little rare price shoots up. Take Pentium 4 boards right now. Higher end used models are a fortune. Try to find mass produced mobos that have the right specs to save cash. Dell boards are usually more affordable in the used market then high end gamer boards for example.

care to elaborate?

>SSDs finally affordable for non-enthusiasts
>4K finally affordable
>8C/16T hits mainstream
>ITX machines aren't only good for remote sessions
>HDDs with 14tb consume as little power as 1tb used to
>Software RAID becomes viable
>Home network with 10G starts getting affordable
>Wireless connectivity not slow as all fuck anymore
Only the first few things that came to mind. But yeah, tech has halted, Scumm VM runs on my Pentium 4 just fine, what else do I need?

Small electronics went the way of automobiles, planned obsolescence. Everything soldered, no active cooling, prioritizing ounce differences in weight over durability. As much as I'd like to shit on Intel, the tdp of their quadcores has improved dramatically allowing for laptops to actually run off their battery for regular use.

I felt like that for a long time, but now I think I'm ready to move on. I'm still using a 2007 era Core 2 Duo laptop and an iPhone 3G S, but I'm getting pretty sick of both.

>4K finally affordable
I never understood the 4k meme.
Can you give me a quick rundown?
Why would I want that?
Wouldn't it make everything tiny as fuck on my monitor?
Do I really need all that space?
For games, it makes them run like shit unless you have a powerhouse, I'd rather play 1080p with some good AA.

>new thing bad, old thing good
Ive been using computers and the internet since the early 90s (tail end of bbs days), and i was always excited for the next gen and the newer tech. That excitement fizzled out about 10 years ago when most hardware advances slowed and tech devices became increasingly consumerist and cheap. I think this perspective is worth mentioning because for a long time new was better to me, but now i say "new tech sucks" (for the most part) and its a relatively recent phenomenon.

I feel the same. I recently got a new phone and it's just straight up worse than my 2013 phone. Less battery life and no headphone jack. Can't even turn down/up volume during a call. I guess that's what I get for not doing any research and just going for the most expensive "free" phone from my contract.

4k isn't a meme, its a resolution. Resolution is one of the variables in determining PPI (with size). General speaking higher PPI is almost always better, and can't hurt (you can always drive it with a lower res signal).

50 inch 4k tvs cost like 300 to 400 dollars
>Why would you want that
Because they are getting cheap and are superior to 1080p tvs, once 4k is the standard 8k will become the resolution for the rich and the enthusiasts
>Wouldnt it make everything tiny as fuck on my monitor
Resolutions dont work like that retard
>For games, it makes them run like shit unless you have a powerhouse, I'd rather play 1080p with some good AA.
1080p is still fine for gaming and yes 4k requires a fucking powerhouse and upgrades every generation to keep up but 4k tvs for your living room are a must

Yup. It's going to happen more and more as the rush of constantly getting cool new things wears off and everything is pretty much the same just with iterative differences. In all areas of life, people are going to start to question whether all the work they're doing to buy the newest and best thing is actually worth it.

But 4k isnt a thing that you consume and goes away after 4 or 5 years

>Can you give me a quick rundown?
>Why would I want that?
Why wouldn't you want 4K if it isn't more expensive in production than 1080p anymore? Once R&D is paid, there's no reason for budget 4K devices to be more expensive than 2K devices.
>Wouldn't it make everything tiny as fuck on my monitor?
You can either combat this by simple display size, or increase scaling. Personally I got no issue with 27" 4k on 100% scaling though. During browsing or something similar.
>Do I really need all that space?
It's not about space, it's about everything being crisper, visually more pleasing. You can however make it about space. If you get a 3X" Monitor and use it like other people would use a dual monitor setup when working. It's why UWQHD is so nice for some people. It's perfect to have 2 windows in basically 4:3 1720:1440 side by side when browsing and when gaming the 21:9 is fairly nice.
Resolution is key for a setup like that.

Also for gaymen it's the perfect resolution. It scales perfectly with 1080p, so you can play demanding games in 1080p without it looking any worse than 1080p (unlike 1440p, bc of interpolation) and less demanding games in 2160p making them much more enjoyable. What resolution can do to an old PS2 or Wii title is just insane.

>During browsing or something similar.
Scratch that, forgot to delete

youre just a woke user, realizing that function > form.
laptop keyboards is a great example of technology going into the shitter.

And keyboards are still shit no?

laptop keyboards were always shit

As long as pixels aren't indistinguishable at the distance you have your monitor higher resolutions aren't memes. The only meme is being an early adopter due to the price and generally inferior first generation products. Once newer tech falls into a decent budget and the quality of the products improve it becomes a decent time to switch if you're due to an upgrade.

4K is still a meme on phones though. As long as you don't look at your display from 5cm or less you can't tell the pixels apart on a 1080p screen.

>current year
>walk into computer store look at laptops
>all laptops have garbage chiclet keyboards, shiny glossy screens, 1080P is still not a standard for every laptop, hinges all look like shit that will snap off in less then 3 years, ethernet port is becoming a bad thing cause apple, screens are all garbage and look horrendous to use, bending plastic everywhere

yep, back to using the desktop with the good old aay M dee phenom 2 or i5 2500k and shitpad like rest of Jow Forums

Have sex

>It's depressing to know I'll probably end up like some Richard Stallman type
What's depressing about that?
It would be depressing if you turned into a consumerist normie buying shit products.

Scaling in every non-mobile OS sucks, some apps work well, many are a blurry mess, some refuse to scale at all.
1440p at 24"-27" is a sweet spot for monitors since they have decently high PPI and can still be used at 100% scaling. Plus any decent GPU can push games at 1440p.

why oh why didn't i take the blue pill...

>Why would I want that?
I don't know why you would want it, but I like to have more screen real estate. It's useful for photo editing and for dev, which are the things I use my computer for.

People are slowly leaving 2000s tech for this era 2019-2020 tech. I've seen people using their samrtphones as musics other than ipods, ive seen people using samsung devices other than iphones, ive seen people using Tablets (or detachable ones) other than laptops. That just technology progression dude.

Ever since the iPod, iPhone and that corporations have been developing technology to target a wide audience and improve their lifestyles by making things easier for them. That mindset has only become exponentially more prominent thanks to the internet so there's no turning back. If genuine tech junkies had their way technology would be far less accessible yet probably better focused on functionality for centralised purposes greatly beneficial for businesses as opposed to people. Since people are gullible suckers, they'll buy any tech that's socially acceptable regardless of its value. Those wireless Apple earphones everyone wears in public now is just one example of the misery we've brought upon ourselves and will continue to suck up to these corporations who know they don't need to put in effort to develop technology for the betterment of humanity, only shitting out what sells. Where are the battery improvements? No need to make the effort; let's just make people charge their devices by providing power sources in more places than ever. Where's the innovative, wild west of an internet that it once was? Forget it; now that everyone uses it we can't let you post anything that may or may not harm a mental midget! Seriously, fuck this society that we brought upon ourselves in the past decade.

You can still take it.

Apple has been stagnated on their development dude. They're now doing Livestream, something they should've previously thought. Steve jobs is spinning in his grave now.

You guys don't get it yet, desktops are dead, laptops are in the meh category forever, smart phones and on the go smaller devices are the future forever, get used to it, your desktop culture is dieing

4k is not a meme. 4k has like 4 times the color information vs 1080p. Gaming on 4k is mostly not preferred, but sometimes it's really mind blowing- especially if there is HDR/good color effects.

OP technology is starting to reach diminishing returns. I am amazed that my 8350 desktop from 2013 is still fine to use. It can still run most big games unless something with the game is fucked up. I looked into upgrading and it hardly seemed worth it, since I don't do a lot of AAA gaming.

It's because there is not mass development in the desktop space anymore lol. No one wants to sit at a desk at home like a fucking fat ass

>desktops are dead, laptops are in the meh category forever, smart phones and on the go smaller devices are the future forever, get used to it, your desktop culture is dieing
This, based.

In fact since 2000s is now almost a vintage era. You guys are complaining about vintage hardware.

Facts

I'm actually veering more and more into the diy/Linux direction thanks to how tech turned out.

I liked Windows Phone, aside from a few issues in that system, and fucking despise both Android and iOS. Not just because of the OS itself, but also because most hardware is unimaginative and thrown together haphazardly.
For example, there are barely any phones with an always-on screen like all of the Lumias had, which is apparently a result of modern smartphones having chink displays without buffers
In addition, it's now all rectangular glass bricks. Where are the slide-out keyboards, flip-phones, e-paper displays and phones with replaceable covers/batteries?
Also, where the fuck are the phones that aren't humongous?
I'm talking 4" screens here. The iPhone SE has a decent enough size, but it's a fucking iPhone. Currently I have pic related because I literally couldn't find anything decent between 4.7 and 2.4".

Similar story with x86 devices. 2in1 devices hybrids took off decently well with Windows 8, but then Microsoft buttfucked them with Windows 10's downgraded touch UI - despite putting all touch stuff into a separate mode anyway.
I can't fix that, but I can switch to Linux and adjust a DE to my liking. I just hope this market niche of devices will continue existing for the foreseeable future.
I would get the Surface Go if it had a USB-A port instead of USB-C and I can't buy chink shit because I can't get over how good the screens on Surfaces are.

I also want a fitness tracker/smart watch that works standalone and syncs directly to my PC, with a tool for reading out the data.
No bluetooth, no mobile data, no fucking cloud. Just a simple device that allows me to measure my fitness data.
There is not a single fucking device like that out there. The only similar one is the fitness trackers by Beurer, which can sync to a phone app without an account, but I don't want to work with my fitness data on my fucking phone. I want to do it on a properly sized screen.

If you have to ask you wouldn't understand.

>posting this generic Jow Forums opinion
>anyone else haha
are you stupid? This board is an NPC hive for people with the same opinion, no, newer thinkpads are better. Fuck off

There's no reason to replace my 8 year old motherboard or my 8 year old processor that's been at 4.5 ghz since I built it. I've changed out a psu and a hard drive and I'm only going to upgrade when it finally dies. I'm not alone in it either as most of the enthusiast I know are still running sandy bridge with zero cares.

this reads like a pasta.
post some fucking arguments of why you regret your upgrades or go fuck yourself.

>tfw nobody sells dead i5-2500 to turn into a necklace
SANDY BRIDGE NAYSH YALL

Higher PPI generally requires more backlight for the same brightness so it does reduce battery life. You can't avoid this even running at lower resolutions because it's a physical property.

>You can either combat this by simple display size, or increase scaling. Personally I got no issue with 27" 4k on 100% scaling though. During browsing or something similar.
There's some weird shit with windows where it pretends that your monitor is 4 times as big when trying to pass the mouse between a 1080p and 4k monitor. There's also some issues with scaling on certain programs, ShareX and mumble come to mind as well as weird window size changing.

These are all issues with using 1080p and 4k between two monitors though.

chiclet keyboards look cheap and ugly

When I'm finally done with it I'm having the CPU mounted as a display piece to remind me of its service

My biggest gripe with modern tech, especially notebooks and phones, is that everything is fucking glued and soldered together.
I dont want to pay 1000+ Juwros for a fucking laptop and being stuck wit a 256gb SSD that's soldered to the mainboard.

arguably worse than old thinkpad keyboards, but objectively the best you can buy now

It's a big scam. Since now hardware is so powerful and shit they gotta find a way to get you to keep buying each new version of "it" each year.

Computers especially; aside from DX 12 what is the point of moving to Windows Ten? Nothing. Windows 7 = supports drives up to petrabyte size thanks to gpt. Also supports ram up to 192GB. So again what's the point of upgrading when when os is not even hitting the limit of hardware support? Not a thing. Since the os still had breathing room, MS forced the issue by saying "we're gonna stop supporting it" to get people to move on.

V.S XP 32bit. Then you had a limit built in. You were capped at 4GB ram and 2TB hdd.

seriously though, just bought a thinkpad x1 extreme. both SSDs are replaceable, memory is replaceable, battery is replaceable, pretty sure the keyboard and screen are replaceable but for some reason the graphics card and CPU are soldered. is there some specific reason this is the case?

I almost just bought one of those but decided on the X1 because it has the HDR display and I don't need the dgpu or the extra cores.

it's just cheaper and can save some space.

It’s just boring, and ruined by the constant barrage of advertising and marketing trying to convince you otherwise. I feel dirty supporting any of this garbage.

Thinks to standards being all b.c you can toss a 14TB drive in a old 2004 era pc w/sata I ports and as long as the OS supported gpt it would show up fine. The point is that by the by the reason to keep upgrading to a whole new system is rapidly shrinking. The thing that spurs upgrading anymore is gaming. If you don't game with the latest titles, what's the point.

MS/Others know this. So they build in limits/other shit to force you to move on. Otherwise you could keep running that 2004 era shit forever long as they kept standards all the same (ATX/SATA)

Looks like people of your age became a bit slower. Progress doesn't care actually. A lot of options isn't a bad thing after all.

When my x220t was new it had a better battery life than most laptops even dream about today

lenovo can suck my ass after that adware shit, cunts refuse to roll out android pie for the g6 too

How do you know they are shit not wearing out at least one by yourself?

+1

Just buy the thing that ages according to your needs. It's that simple nowadays and always.

>all the manufacturers made some pact
Foxconn and Foxconn. Who else have I forgot? Yeah, Foxconn.

...wat? No on mentioned laptops/phones, but yeah, its obviously retarded for tiny screens. Not even because of the battery situation, but because for the distance you are viewing them 1440 or even 1080 are going to be more than enough.

the x1 extreme has a 4k UHD HDR option, it's glossy as fuck though
personally went with the FHD though since it's matte and has a thinkshutter for safe masturbation sessions

>"HEY SIRI, UNLOCK THE FRONT DOOR."
>She unlocked the front door.
My sides are ruined.

I weared out 2 thinkpad's keyboards on my t510 since 2014. So, it always depends. And in occasion, power on button located on the keyboard for some reasons.

T430 and upgrade the shit out of it
Or the most recent T4xx with removable battery, RAM and secondary memory if you don't care about the botnet

>DOS games had whole list of extension cards to choose from
Wouldn't exactly say there was a "whole list", we had SoundBlaster and Gravis Ultrasound and that was it, those were your options. There were more options on the network side of things; not that it was a good thing.

Sony xperia are still the same phone it was in the past but with modern specs, Nokia and blackberry still produce older looking phones too, but mostly because they hopped really late into the game.

As for laptops get an X62.

gendering an ai was the most outrageous part.

You’re schizo. I just got an xps 15 with 32 GB of RAM, 1 TB SSD, a dPGU with 4GB of dedicated VRAM, and a 6 core CPU that can run at 3.9 GHz forever (it needed thermal mods and undervolting). This shit is faster than my gaymun PC from 5 years ago for the same price ($1500). Old tech can’t remotely keep up. SSDs alone were barely a thing 10 years ago.

If you don't like what's currently available then make something you would like, then discover that nobody else wants that and it won't sell which is why nobody is making tech like that anymore.

Right one looks objectively better
Left one looks blocky, filled with useless buttons and ugly as fuck
Imagine actually using that outside LMAO

Your XPS can't serve as a server because it has no ethernet port.

>hosting

Are you off your meds? I have a dual CPU 24 core system with 128 GB of RAM for hosting. Who said anything about using a client as a server. Fuck iff retard.

Oh and you forgot the native 10 GbE in the thunderbolt 3 port. You can make whatever fucking stupid setup you want with machines today that would have been equally as expensive and messy ten years ago, except with a quarter of cores and RAM.
