It's far from zombie, you obviously confused MPC-HC with MPC-BE, the latter is actively developed, as for the former it's still gets updates albeit unofficially.

seriously, whenever i see software being updated, it's usually for things like "Added Belgian localization" and "fixed bug where that feature nobody ever uses was slow" sort of thing.

If you check the changelog you'll see lots of new features, libraries, improvements and of course bug fixes. trust me it's worth the update.

More features,GPU accel material like HEVC plays better, actively developed unlike HC. Many are not aware that but MPC-BE is been developed by an ex members of the MPC-HC team.

Or you can use MPV . Don't like it's minimalism? Get SMplayer which has a typical ui plus all of mpv power beneath the hood.
