Consumer SSDs capped at 4TB

It's been three years since pic related debuted. We've been stuck with 4TB limit for consumer drives ever since. It's not even about SATA; anything bigger is reserved for servers/specialised workstations. Even if I have the money I can't buy a bigger drive which means I'm stuck with derelict HDDs.

Not to mention pic related is V-NAND V3. It means 4TB in 2.5" enclosure were doable with 48 layers. Since 2016 we jumped through V4 (64 layer) to V5 (96 layers). 8TB should be the current limit.

yeah yeah consumer tech is shit everything is a lie and everyone is a snake oil merchant
what else is new?

It's certainly doable in a 2.5" drive, but everyone wants to cram the tech on the 2280 form factor. Surely you could fit at least 8tb on 2.5". Problem is people won't pay over $400 for a high capacity SSD.

HDD MASTER RACE

SSDLETS NEED NOT APPLY

Shut the fuck up. I'm so tired of being disrespected on this goddamn website. All I wanted to do was post my opinion. MY OPINION. But no, you little bastards think it's "hilarious" to mock those with good opinions. My opinion. while not absolute, is definitely worth the respect to formulate an ACTUAL FUCKING RESPONSE AND NOT JUST A SHORT MEME OF A REPLY. I've been on this site for 6 months: 6 MONTHS and I have never felt this wronged. It boils me up that I could spend so much time thinking and putting effort into things while you shits sit around (probably jerking off to traps or whatever gay shit you like) and make fun of the intellectuals of this world. I've bored you? Good for fucking you. Literally no one cares that your little brain is to underdeveloped and rotted to comprehend my idea...MY GREAT GREAT IDEA. I could sit here all day whining, but I won't. I'm NOT a whiner. I'm a realist and an intellectual. I know when to call it quits and to leave the babybrains to themselves. I'm done with this goddamn site and you goddamn immature children. I have lived my life up until this point having to deal with memesters and idiots like you. I know how you work. I know that you all think you're "epik trolls" but you're not. You think you baited me? NAH. I've never taken any bait. This is my 100% real opinion divorced from anger. I'm calm, I'm serene. I LAUGH when people imply I'm intellectually low enough to take bait. I always choose to reply just to spite you. I won. I've always won. Losing is not in my skillset. So you're probably gonna reply "lol epik trolled" or "u mad bro" but once you've done that you've shown me I've won. I've tricked the trickster and conquered memery. I live everyday growing stronger to fight you plebs and low level trolls who are probably 11 (baby, you gotta be 18 to use Jow Forums). But whatever, I digress. It's just fucking annoying that I'm never taken serious on this site, goddamn.

what the fuck is wrong with that you seething cunt

...

If you're a consumer and you need 4+ TB of storage, you're likely hoarding some kind of data and will be better served by HDDs.

How many consumers would actually benefit from a 8TB SSD instead of, say, 1TB SSD + 4x8TB HDDs for the same price?

If you're

>If you're
did u get shot bro

I have no idea how that ended there

Attached: 1339691084483.jpg (440x658, 70K)

it's candlejack newfag

Everyone would benefit from it, just on seak time alone, but how many NEED that is another question entirely.

1tb is 110$
4tb is 540$

Let's be 100% honest, if you are spending over 500$ on storage, you are no longer a fucking consumer and we are no longer talking about consumer hardware.

8tb by this logic would start to cost somewhere around 1100$

NOW, with all of this said.

amazon.com/Aplicata-Quad-NVMe-PCIe-Adapter/dp/B074WV4ZN4

and get 4 of

or

You could even raid two 4tb if you really wanted, ssds typically either cribdeath or last till write failures.

>at no point did user ever even come close to saying that
Glad you're getting roped for being retarded.

Seek time doesn't matter if you're hoarding video or flacs

>master race
>SSD eating it away reducing market share killing its profit due to economics of scale
>every year it get more expensive to make cause less people buying.

Who the heck buys 4TB SSDs?

You think the average grandma does it?

Come on

>I'm too poor to afford better SSDs
>hurr what the fuck is wrong with consumer SSDs!
Retards

>>SSD eating it away
Only the lowest end, and yes, 1-2-3-4 TBs don't differ in price that much. Again, laptop 500GBs cost almost like 1TB, so no harm done yet: those who want something like 2TB and up, will continue to buy HDD.

some quantum logic there my friend

nice copy pasta

It's probably because the public is more than fine with the little sub 500GB sizes. They can pump the tiny crap on the market and people guzzle it up.
I wouldn't be surprised at all if the companies were limiting SSDs on purpose because they know that their HDD market would be absolutely raped if they allowed proper SSDs sizes on the market.
They've had +30TB sizes or couple of years now. Pic related came out last year. It has 100TB in it and it fits into your pocket.

What the fuck did you just fucking say about me, you little bitch? I’ll have you know I graduated top of my class in the BSL IV pathogens, and I’ve been involved in numerous outbreaks on the African continent, and I have over 300 confirmed kills. I am trained in gorilla infection and I’m the top virus in the entire filovirus family. You are nothing to me but just another plasmid. I will wipe you the fuck out with contagion the likes of which has never been seen before on this Earth, mark my fucking words. You think you can get away with saying that shit to me over the Internet? Think again, fucker. As we speak I am contacting my secret network of animal vectors across the USA and your genome is being traced right now so you better prepare for the disease, maggot. The disease that wipes out the pathetic little thing you call your life. You’re fucking dead, kid. I can be anywhere, anytime, and I can kill you in over seven hundred ways, and that’s just with my protein toxin factors. Not only am I extensively trained in human to human transmission, but I have access to the entire arsenal of virulence factors and I will use them to its full extent to infect your miserable ass off the face of the continent, you little shit. If only you could have known what unholy retribution your little “clever” comment was about to bring down upon you, maybe you would have held your fucking tongue. But you couldn’t, you didn’t, and now you’re paying the price, you goddamn idiot. You will shit fury all over yourself and you will drown in it once I infect you. You’re fucking dead, kiddo.

seak time improves EVERYTHING, opening folders is faster, searching is faster, for me, I do a weekly backup of a program, and with a hdd, the immense amount of files I need to write, moving it to a hdd off an nvme takes 15 minutes, but If I moved it to an ssd it would be done in maybe 1 minute, never had a ssd to ssd to really put that to the test, but I consider getting one for this all the time. looking up ssd prices just now... 120$ for 1tb... make me want to fucking cum with that. been considering a secondary ssd for games + misc files for a while, and that price for ssds, fucking fantastic.

you think your the hot shit but your just another idiot like the rest of them i bet the only pussy your getting is the type that says woof you stupid fuck by which i mean you get no pussy at all you ignorant cunt how about you get with the times and stop trying to pretend your something your not maybe then people wont hate you you stupid prink if i ever see you strolling in my neighbourhood ill fucking jump out the window with my brick and youll be pummelled into the sidewalk son like a motherfucker who thinks he knows what hes doing the police wont even care theyll take one look at you and theyll see your stupid clothes and decided you fucking deserved it

Man I wish I had this 3.5" 100TB monster in my PC

the last time I got a price on a 16tb drive it was 25000$
ssds for enterprise aren't magicly cheaper, there is no fuck the consumer price gouging (for the most part) here, you get what you pay for and ssds are so fucking expensive that there is no consumer viability for 4+tb at that price

You aren't opening folders, searching or backing up when you're hoarding video or music. You add that shit once to the player library and then the only benefit from a SSD will be that your movie will start playing 0.2 seconds quicker.

Program data belongs on a SSD, but nobody in the "consumer" group has 4 TB of that.

The storage Jews don't want you to use local storage. Just use the Cloud

see

I open a folder with 16k files in it every fucking day, then at night I have another 24k file folder opened.
I have a database of every comic I have, and it takes time to open because it a hdd, on the ssd I tested with, shit is instant.

You imagine music, I imagine a fuck huge unsorted download folder or an image archive, both of these benefit greatly from faster seek.

but i'm talking to someone who never used an ssd, so they don't know how fast folders open on one compared to a hdd. how much quality of life they bring. we just put boot and programs on them now because that's all an average person can afford and the benefit is that drastic while the benefit is there for everything, its not as drastic.

this

Nigger, I have a folder with 500k+ data files in 1k+ subfolders, and no shit that's faster to work with on a SSD. But it does not require a 8TB one.

If you have work folders with tens of thousands of files taking up 4+ terabytes, you are most definitely not a consumer.

he just can't let go of that windows

>multiple terabytes of unsorted downloads

You need professional help, not a large SSD.

Attached: nigger.jpg (366x380, 20K)

A 4tb SSD costs 700€ in Europe.

You can just buy multiple 4 TB SSDs and combine them into one logical volume. A 3.5" bay can hold two and a 5.25" bay can hold four.

If you need 8TB in a laptop with a single drive bay, you're probably doing something wrong.

I have a lot of family photos. I browse them daily.

Its just artificially limited so they don't have to spend in research no stop.
If everyone wanted they could keep releasing bigger SSDs every month buy that would imply huge research costs and that your old products will be obsolete.
Why release a new product if people are still buying your old product for the same price after years?

All it takes is one company to create a price war and they would decrease massively, but doing so means they will also lose money not only everyone else.
See RAM prices for example.

N I G G E R S

bump

Dumb anime girls thinking they're clever are so fuckable. It's the best doujin trope.💯

>SSDs aren't worth the performance they give
People in Jow Forums are stupid and tech-illiterate.

subscribed to both

like! and 0.00014 btc to you my friend

>but everyone wants to cram the tech on the 2280 form factor
Because they can and do literally charge double for it.

>4TB SSD's
Your average consumer subscribes to Netflix, also uses Amazon and has a Prime membership. They may take some photos on their phone but they're all uploaded to the cloud.
They have some business software installed and businesses are okay with this. There's some gamers out there who want bigger drives but honestly does the PC gaming market and enthusiasts matter? No.

Overall, it's because of demand. HDD's still work fine for hoarding and what consumers want is served already. Money is what makes the world go round and we have a huge amount of unused space. We don't need to go purging every HDD onb the planet to save space right now and manufacturers know that.
If you're really so fucking desperate for a larger SSD then you can already figure out another solution.

>moving it to a hdd off an nvme takes 15 minutes
You could just brew a nice cup of tea for 7 nminutes, have a 5 minute wank, 1 minute cleanup and one minute of sobbing before you drink your tea in that time.

Everything doesn't need to be done at lightning speed, bro.

Attached: 1552318231518.jpg (511x509, 36K)

Just buy two lol

Who cares anyway? No one can afford these SSDs anyway. Unless you need a highend workstation for professional things like 4K video editing.

I stopped having all my games installed, so my SSDs aren't even half full. I don't play them anyway. All I need is AOE 2.
I want that for my server, but I wait until there is a 20 TB version. Though I would only use HDDs for file storage. You don't want to edit videos on them.

Attached: snip.jpg (1320x904, 109K)

What are you storing more than 4 TB of that you need high speed access to? Get a reasonable SSD and a huge HDD. Stuff you need quick random access to goes on the SSD. Media and shit goes on the HDD.

> Ryzen
> 110 C

Mega yikes! Ayymd confirmed for housefires!

>How many consumers would actually benefit from a 8TB SSD instead of, say, 1TB SSD + 4x8TB HDDs for the same price?
People with lots of AAA videogames maybe. A pro Twitch streamer for example.

Excuse your ryzen

getting roped? edgelords sound so fucking gay

HDDs are too loud for my liking..I considered 2.5" but they only do up to 2TB, and they're the loudest ones. 1 or 2TB where the quietest for 3.5". I just bought a 2tb SSD instead.

AMD chips always run hot in Speccy. Some get close to the temperature of the sun.

Do these idiots really believe the faulty temps, every modern chip would turn off before reaching that temperature.

a tv series can take 2-40gb a season depending on the quality you will deal with
a movie is between 600mb and 100gb, again, depending on quality.
comics/manga is going to be 10-50mb a chapter
porn can get up to 200mb a chapter
images start at 100kb and go up from there, with current normal high quality stuff sitting at 1-2mb

I don't trust the cloud, I don't trust I will be able to find it again if I don't download it. I have had FAR to many instances were what i'm trying to find is lost forever due to a place shutting down and what i'm looking for being just obscure enough to not not be findable in a search, and having it mislabeled badly enough to not be able to brute force it.

considering 20 years of my life fit on around 10tb, its not bad.

I have folders with tons of images or other files and an SSD would certainly help me out browsing those.

This. Your average consumer can't even fill up a 1TB drive.

walking human failures think like that

>huge HDD
enjoy your drive failure and loss of terabytes of data

>How many consumers would actually benefit from a 8TB SSD instead of, say, 1TB SSD + 4x8TB HDDs for the same price?

I would because the idea of going back to prehistoric mechanical drives makes me retch.

All my friends are average normies and they buy external drives for their laptops because they ran out of space.

Sata will be dead very soon. Seriously. We need more Pcie lanes and (pcie version 4) so nvme can stretch its legs.

>pcie version 4
Soon! Intel Sapphire Rapids 7nm coming in 2028.

Amd will have it this year.

it does only if you can afford it. ;_;
for poorfag ee's it might as well not exist.

They can do it they just don't care as so little will buy it

Attached: Samsung-860-QVO-SSD-featured-image.jpg (1280x720, 43K)

There's nothing stopping you from buying enterprise SSDs other than being a poorfag.

Attached: 2019.04.02_06-00-19.png (2050x1140, 366K)

if only something like raid 0 existed

Attached: 1536030757114.jpg (466x358, 21K)

I can afford it. I can't put it in my pc.

This is some sad shit.

over sata3? no thanks.

i think he meant that you need to learn to fucking sort it instead of just dumping it all in the same god damn folder like a moron

choose the correct folder directly when you download ....

>When you have lived long enough for 500gb to be considered "tiny crap"

are they trying to cash in on the rYzen and epYc memes? fucking cringe

But if you use HDDs you ARE a SSDlet, dum dum
