I never got mine to work with a printer.

that's weird, didn't have to install shit on Ubuntu 18.04

but it is your fault and you are a brainlet

Nice blog, how do I unsubscribe?

Same shit happens to everyone, stick with it though.

>you just HAD to know the name of the thirty packages you needed
For HP printers it's usually just one (maybe two if you want a GUI configuration menu as well). And no, you don't just have to know the name of the package. Searching "HP driver linux" with your favorite search engine should tell you to look for HP's Linux Imaging and Printing software (aka HPLIP).
Alternatively you can use the search function provided by your package manager to search your distro's repositories. Maybe use it in combination with grep to narrow down the results, if you have absolutely no clue what to look for.

>thirty minutes installing a fucking printer
>somehow it starts working after an hour

Pretty much every printer I've tried in Linux has been plug, add it in the settings window and done.

>I spent thirty minutes installing a fucking printer.
so this is the power of OP

Windows user here. What's a printer?

>using a printer in 2019
You only have yourself to blame

>uses an HP inkjet printer
Theres your problem.

Why did you take the picture in black and white?

how did you do it so fast

Debian user detected.

Are you retarded, by chance?

on windows i had to print things from my phone because my computer wouldnt recognise it
on linux it just werked
so this is the power of linux

I spent like 5 minutes setting it up. I just read these pages:

wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS
wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CUPS/Printer-specific_problems

>30 minutes
Is this the power of being retarded?

>Going onto shodan and looking for open printers and printing out documents on them and including your home address at the bottom so they can mail them back to you

top kek

>I spent thirty minutes
Sounds pretty good senpai, took me around an hour to get printing working from my arch laptop.

> I spent thirty minutes installing a fucking printer.
Next time it will be easier. I spent hours helping office people with them on Windows.

>somehow it starts working after an hour
And you want people not to call you a brainlet.

>t. Archfag

meanwhile on a mac
>plug printer
>os downloads driver in background
>it just works

This is false and you know it. 99% of the time you have to go install the stuff from the manufacturer's driver website anyways.

Stop lying seething linuxfag. Everything in my 10 years of windows usage was plug and play, the only thing I had to ever get online were bios drivers, which have nothing to do with OS.

That's been my experience with Wangblows every time I've used it while in Loonix the drivers are either already in the kernel or I'll get it from a repo or feed a PPD into CUPS and call it a day.

t. uses poorfag chinkshit with obscure chipsets

lulnix users everyone

Yeah until an update drops support for your printer and you have to give it to your grandson because it's now useless.
t. that grandson

Nope, didn't turn off Windows Update. Stay buttblasted, Winnigger.

Then you're a retard. That's literally plug and play.

In $current_year there are 2 reasons anything doesn't magically work connecting it to any OS:
1. the hardware is shit
2. The user is a retard

They're like that on Windows too.

I wish I was joking.

Linux is not for printers. Linux is for "I'm not fucking paying $6,155 burger tickets for Windows Server 2019" and "Loli hentai isn't strictly illegal per se. It's more of a legal gray area".

>not having a PostScript printer

>connect printer to network
>add printer on computer
>load PPD file
>start printing

Printers are absolutely the worst fucking pieces of technology.
Sometimes they will just(tm) werk(tm) when plugged in and the next time they won't fucking work until you turn them on and off again and then they might work again or maybe not, who knows?!???
Maybe reinstalling the drivers will fix it or maybe not, maybe it will just werk again the next day?
Not to mention the absolute and utter fucking scam known as ink cartidges

I can see why a printer pushed GNU/Stallman over the edge.

This, but also you're a brainlet, OP.

Most consumers won't give any shits because they don't use printers often enough to care and the Ink Jew will huckster in perpetuity.

Unironically this.
Nobody on the ENTIRE FLOOR of my graduate CS department connects to the printer through normal means, except for one person whose macbook picked it up. Nobody elses will. Nobody knows why. Everybody just saves their shit as a PDF (print to PDF option) and then smacks the IP of the printer into a browser and directly submits the job that way.

Printers are fucking obnoxious and the fact there's still not a well defined driver or system API or SOMETHING to just shove bits to it to print is ridiculous

Worked out of the box for me.

Linux is a kernel.

Blame the shitty printer company for providing driver support only for windows or whatever.

Next time buy your hardware with open source in mind.

Wow. Contact Guinness World Records.

Kek

>Install KDE Neon

Lol. What is digital signature?
Also all banks I'we been to have wacom tablets for signing
>connect old ass Canon Pixma printer
Canon has messed up drivers for Windows let alone for anything else
>SORRY NO PRINT NOTHIN BC YALLOW INK EMPTEH JEJ
>mfw i dont want yallow ink to print a simple text file
Corporate greed. Only pro grade plotters have the ability to print per color also most black colors aren't true black.
As a guy who worked in printing for years, fuck all printers and their spawn...

Depending on the printer, you may take several months to have it running on windows (because you will have to write your own drivers), while it will just werk on linux.

My wireless one printer+scanner works out of a box

Fedora

The printer want to put the secret yellow dots:

I know, Stallman. I know.

Yeah, fascinating...

let me guess you are using fucking arch or some other retarded ass distro.

And this is why i just stick with Ubuntu, it's always just werked for me. I know i'm a pleb, but i'd rather be a pleb that can get things done than a master hacker who takes an hour to print a test page.

ITT salty archfags justifying a lousy design

Avahi comes by default on pretty much any desktop distro, you went the arch route or the minimal route, of course this would happen
Retard

>he didn't use driverless
>he doesn't know how printers over network work at all
>he doesn't even know what mDNS is and uses a distro that doesn't even run avahi out of the box

In all honesty, you really are a moron OP.

Why would you need a printer?

>So this is the power of Linux.
CUPS is developed by Apple.
>I spent thirty minutes installing a fucking printer.
Suicide is your only option

lol what difference does it make even if you can do all this shit some retard will just hire another retard to do it infinitely worse just because they feel more comfortable being smarter than somebody with a learning curve

>I need 30 minutes to install a fucking printer
So this is the power of OP (aka fag)

this. Installed a small laser printer yesterday for the first time on a mac

it took less than a minute
On android, around 3-4 minutes
On PC, around 3 mins

you dont need any of that shit. just download printer postscript drivers from openprinting.com . cross platform printer support. Easiest way to print on any os

Linux + Brother printer.

>COMMAND LINE CODE

Attached: 1517434416757.png (642x724, 136K)

Arch fag here, just setup some shitty HP envy network printer.

sudo pacman -S cups avahi nss-mdns
sudo vim /etc/nsswitch.conf (add mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] before resolve)
sudo systemctl enable avahi-daemon.service org.cups.cupsd.service
sudo systemctl start avahi-daemon.service org.cups.cupsd.service
Goto webgui (localhost:631/) in browser
New printer, finds printer, click add, next, next, print test page, finish
Printer works :)

You skip all of this just by using a distro that comes with every thing already setup, you can't expect Plug-and-Play on a D.I.Y distro if you haven't even setup Plug-and-Play yet.

>Linux sucks, it isn't me I swear!@

Attached: 1243626348346.png (440x327, 187K)

I don't remember needing to install printer+scanner drivers since maybe ubuntu 14.xx. But I do have popular printer+scanner and ubuntu/mint/manjaro is for brainlets.

>kernel is responsible for ux of printing

This user will go far in life.
Or at least get some angry letters from some african place.

you know what the fuck I am talking about.- you know, when you open the terminal, and need to type in commands to run shit. You are one step away from critiquing grammar you gigantic faggot.

Linux fags are the fucking worst I swear to fucking god. They think they are so smart because wasting their time is a badge of honor.

>hold up. you didn't memorize all that shit that's needed once in a blue moon! fucking retard.

>thirty minutes
I spent three years installing a printer.
Because I had to read the fucking manual.

kys user

>the settings window
Kill yourself if you have a "settings window"

Xubuntu easily saw my printer that was on wifi and printed fine.

t. NEET Archtard

thank you for the post now i can die happy, very proud of you, thanks again.

windows
>download 300mb 'printer suite' from HP
>takes 1h to install
>finally done
>printer still doesn't work

linux
>use the generic drivers that came with the DE
>it just werks

So this is the power of minimalfags

In what world you fucking dunce. In windows you plug it in, windows downloads the drivers, it werks. Linux on the other hand requires that you understand atleast somewhat what you're doing but the thing is, I don't care to know.

As long as you guys perpetuate this fucking nonsense of "you just have to learn the commands brainlet" it will never be the year of Linux.

op can't inb4 faggot. also just plug it in usb style lmao it took me .02 seconds

Attached: imagine.png (1920x1074, 1.53M)

>sysadmin here. done tech support for 10 years+

win 10 = no need to download anything, just installs - 1 min
win 8.1, 7, vista = just download basic drivers, or download the entire package, extract, and install from windows wizard - 10 sec install + x to download

BUT: if you have professional printers (those that cost $5k+), scanners, etc. IT's not that easy to manage, print special stuff, etc. So you need 100% of everything the manufacturer gives you.

>update your printer firmware from time to time, it may work better. especially for new printers.

Look at the page number.
>hpcups 3.19.1
Ubuntu 18.10 (and most likely all distro with similar stability) are on 3.18.7
Arch doesn't have an hpcups package but their hplip is on 3.19.1
I think he's on Arch.

It is what I say it is
