I just purchased a static IP from my ISP. The tech installed a cable modem and gave me some information:

IP Address: 1.2.3.174
Subnet Mask 255.255.255.252
Gateway: 1.2.3.173

So basically I told my ISP I wanted to purchase ONE public static IP and got this block. Now, I understand that there are 4 IPs in this range and only 2 two are usable. It's just that, as someone who has been using a normal dynamic IP all his life, getting a small block of addresses is something new and some things are still kind of confusing.

Like having the IP in your Gateway being different from your "IP Address". You know how in a normal dynamic IP consumer service you just go to google and ask "What's my IP" to get your public IP, the one you pay your ISP for. But here it feels like I have two IPs and I don't really know what's the point of the one that ends in .174,? why is it different from the WAN IP in my Gateway?
