Is the tablet fad finally going away?

Sales are down nearly 10% are all the morons who wrote articles about how professionals like movie editors, animators, CAD drafters, Engineers and software developers would move away from laptops and desktops because of le tablet finally proven wrong?

I remember buying my first tablet in 2012 a cheap chinese thing...it died in a year with a cracked screen. my second tablet and ASUS transformer I got in 2015, I haven't used that thing in years, the last time I used it I only used it because my actual computer had died and I needed to create a bootable USB disk because I needed to reinstal windows (thank god android tablets have USB I would have killed my self if I had to watch my youtube on that little 10 inch screen or had to play games on that slow as shit piece of garbage)

I only did that cuz I was a poor college kid with a hacked together piece of shit PC that barely ran. now I have three hacked together PCs, if I ever have trouble with one, I just plug in the other. I also have a basement now...I think that's where my asus tablet is when I moved I didn't even take out of the box.

you sound way too smug for someone who waited 10 years to gloat about a "fad" going away.

Tablets were just overhyped, they have a reason to exist, like if you want to give your kid who is too young to be trusted with a phone something to watch nextflix on, but the idea that everybody is going to replace their normal computers with a tablet was absurd and wasn't going to ever happen.

Well, the idea was anything worth doing was supposed to be done on cloud services, and a tablet would just be a cheap way to interact with them.

There's a lot of reasons why that might not have panned out but a big one is ITAR and concerns about industrial espionage and zillions of massive data breaches. But those don't matter to consumers as much as they really should so they're still selling as social media consumption machines, if sales are down its probably because of market saturation.

remember when tablets had serial ports and ran on Windows 3.1? Tablets have been around for a while they didn't take over real workstations back then I don't see them ever replacing workstations.

yeah, I never understood it because anything I'd want to do with a tablet, I can do on my phone. and like I've mentioned i'ts not really great for productivity like the sales pitch has claimed, so that's why I think it was always a fad. Apple just took their Iphone and made it three times as big.

I work in programming automation equipment, my Rockwell distributor has complained to me once or three hundred times about windows 10 and how it sucks having to keep developing their software to keep up with it's updates. they literally recommend using window 7 still.

It's pretty bad when Microsoft feels the need to spy on the operator of a 20-ton press or casting machine through the controls. And, like what if one of their forced updates cause the press to crush someone?

I think Siemens, Allen Bradley and Mitsubishi need to just move to Linux and produce their own proprietary operating systems. Trying to develop automation equipment on windows these days can get pretty harry.
