Nice try user.

baséd

not quite 90s (2000-ish I think), but I found this screenshot of mine on old CD. In native 1024x768! I was impressed with 24 days of uptime, apparently.

It's today's screenshot, debian 10

I have vague recollections of an MSN branded edition of Windows 98 or ME. Is this it?

>Vice City
nice

it's XP SP1. That puts the year around 2004

What do you do with these, it all looks so comfy but do you just have them to show off?

The G5 is mostly a space heater for making the window group symmetrical until I throw a 7800 GT and some more memory in it, but I do use the HP-UX machine and repurposed thin clients a lot and the T1000 will eventually become my primary server when I find a better place for it to live than sealed up inside my desk.

Nice, but what triggers my assburgers is that all these Windows 95 esque desktops always use the wrong font. Grab MS Sans Serif (sserif.fon) from a Windows install medium and convert it to bitmap format using FontForge. It'll make the experience feel far more pleasant.
I miss the era of alternative architecture workstations, now everything is either running x86 or ARM.
1024x768 was pretty big. There was a time where high end GPUs targeted 768p, good times.

what theme is this

It's CDE.

Hey sport, let's take those upvotes back to their own website, alright?

mine isn't 90s, but editions are rarely adhered to by everyone anyway

pape?

You went too far back
October 25, 2001 != 90s, but that desktop full of icons is pretty 90s
neat

Attached: openstep.jpg (1024x768, 165K)

Red pill me on Helvetica.

You know what I find odd about older computers (only in hindsight, at the time it was obvious and natural) is that they formed such a symbiosis with other unrelated technologies and concepts. These days it seems it's just the computer itself and it draws everything else in to it and subsumes it.

Arial is not Helvetica and never will be but for bitmapped fonts for 90s interfaces Helvetica is the Unix gold standard

You win the thread

Attached: openstep2.jpg (1024x768, 204K)

How do you mean, user?

how do you go about setting up an environment like OP pic? if I had that, i'd unironically dump my ugly-as-sin windows 10 botnet

Attached: DOtshMAUQAIo1H-.jpg large.jpg (1920x1080, 465K)

It's hard to explain what I mean, as it sounds really weird in the modern world, but computers were just another aspect of an environment, and not the ultimate centre-point of that environment. Think about something as mundane as icons. Now everyone has digital music, what use is using a CD to portray music software?

xfce is practically stuck in the 90s sooo

Attached: Screenshot_2019-03-25_00-35-16.png (1400x1050, 1.92M)

Computers used to print, read faxes, maintain contacts and do all sorts of things with other common home and office equipment. Now everything is a search bar and a bunch of ads

Not 90's but there is no general purpose desktop thread so I'll shit up this one instead

Attached: The Wall.png (1280x800, 449K)

you all have very cute and cool desktops in this thread right here!

Attached: desutop.png (1366x768, 1.22M)

90% of the work is installing the Chicago95 theme

>storing programs in ~/Documents not making a ~/Programs folder and linking the programs to /usr/bin

There is and u know it

Xfce 3.x did a really good job of implementing a CDE-like interface. If you want to try it out grab yourself Slackware 9.0. You'll also get early Gnome 2 and KDE 3. Slackware 4.0 will give you an even better nice taste of 90s Linux.

tried shitcago95 theme on a vm one time on both ubuntu and debian, xfce DE. it was not completely win95 style, some icons were still their xfce defaults or just blanks. I pretty much gave up when I realized how tedious it is to change these things manually, near impossible unless you know your way through loonix filesystem and how themes work underneath. why can't xfce itself just add a panel where you can simply pick an icon for each file type? they make things so hard

Attached: 8m4exrzegvc01.png (1967x1110, 392K)

I fucking hate how little improvement to usability there's been but how much of an increase in system requirements. I remember even "heavy" GNOME 2 and KDE 3 being far faster and more responsive than even Windows 2000 or Xp, but now they feel more sluggish than even Win7.

It's kind of weird how the consolidation has made computers "do less" in absolute terms.

I'm using mate in the OP. Trivial to add support for new file types/programs by symlinking icon to new name.

oh ty, will try mate

The differences between Gnome 2.6 and MATE are quite vast, but MATE is still Gnome 2.x. KDE 3.x had a thriving ecosystem of applications and extensions that KDE 4 never quite got.

We all knew they were bad ideas ten years ago and we're all still right

Good thread theme! Looks awesome, but you need some bitmap fonts!

Looks great

Pretty cool even if it's not 90's. Always respect for Debian.

Pretty based. Only gripe I have is with the start button, but everything else is pretty sweet.

Is there a quick and easy way to dump the context of a file to stdout and colorize the output?

what's the ascii sword and the random text?

You are such a fucking faggot. Copy cat to the maximum degree. Kill yourself because nobody will miss you

Out of all the windows-like rices I've seen on this general this is my favorite.

Attached: 1549218323772.jpg (933x1244, 188K)

The text is cmatrix and the sword is just a cat'd text file
