I installed Gentoo, used it for over 2 years as my main operating system. Now I have switched back to stock Ubuntu because I was tired of configuring and waiting to compile for everything, the systemd-free meme wasn't enough to justify it anymore. do your research first but yes, that's still a very very capable machine. and if you happen to write code and need to do a heavy compute cycle you can write the code on the machine then run it with cloud based resources.
