i can understand running more than one pc if you are rendering/converting stuff or whatever but laptops cant do that sort of shit so exactly are you morons doing with 3 or 4 laptops running

I used to have a laptop constantly downloading.

It used virtually no electricity, why would I use an energy hog to just download movies?

...

Getting up (you)'s

i have 3 laptops running, one is a macbook i have playing music 24/7 and i also use it for recording and editing etc. a notebook used only for banking and then my daily driver with Linux for things like Jow Forums, bootleg movies, porn. Also have a desk top for rendering and gaming

You don't get the full effect of the battlestation unless everything's running.

low power usage server
weirdly decent omnidirection speaker for podcasts
untrusted "trusted" proprietary software required for work/bank/medical

random projects on dedicated systems
and

Im pretty much the only tech guy in the whole town
Any time somebody wants me to look at an old laptop for them, i honestly assess what is wrong with it
Then, i look the person in they eye, and start to tell them "Well, it doesn't look good..."
If they look worried, i go over whatever we can do to fix it.
If they look excited, I know they want bad news so they have an excuse to buy a new laptop.
So i give them some nonsense about how shits fucked and all i can do is recover their files
I tell them i will do the file recovery for free since i feel bad about not being able to fix it, and that i can dispose of the laptop for them and make sure the drive is thoroughly wiped
They leave with their files and an excuse they were looking for, i get a laptop with usually minor issues
They are good for all the servers i host because they are free with built in battery backups

They are self-contained, energy efficient, and have built in battery backups. They're useful for any type of low-resource server or running an isolated/dedicated machine for running a different OS. You might want a dedicated VPN/terminal machine

Why is she licking her pregnancy test stick?

>but laptops cant do that sort of shit
you fucking what

plus, laptops have the added bonus of being particularly resistant to power cuts, so when you've set up whatever long-running job on the machine, it's not just going to die in the middle from a bit of dirty power on the line

there's also shit like just being able to pick up one machine and walk off while the other is busy doing shit
like, for standard audio and video processing, I'll just leave a laptop running for a bit
or if a compile of some huge fucker software package is running
just recently, I used one machine to copy from a dying external to a new one (couldn't really move the disk without it giving trouble), so I left that in the corner and used my other laptop

also, you tend to accumulate machines over time
like, I've got 4 laptops within reach of me

weirdo

its a tooth brush.

how do you know?

I tend to use one laptop per client, so I can keep them isolated from each other. If I'm on call for multiple places at the same time, I'll have multiple laptops out at once, waiting for pagerduty to go off.
