But occasionally there are design mistakes and if the installer doesn't correct them, then the designers complain why didn't he realize it because of "common sense."

I'm an engineer and I love it when we have good contractors who propose alternate solutions that work. They're the ones who see the full picture. Sometimes other trades are design-build so we don't see how their shit interacts with the part we design. The key is that they propose it to us for review and don't just do it just in case it's wrong though.
