I love my thinkpad. Thanks for keeping this thread up all these years.

>>X220/X230 - 12", 768p, cheap and light
That's why you hack a 1440p screen in.

I'm a lazy fuck and I can't be bothered to take a new pic so enjoy this slightly dirty X31.

Attached: My X31.png (872x910, 937K)

Can you throw me a bone?

I'm kinda new in loonix

>have T450 and X230
>like my trusty X230 more than the newer T450

Looks like some good toilet paper and it is on the spindle in the based direction.

you can buy clips with staggered pins for half the price of their pomona equivalent. they work just as good as the pomona 5250 and 5252 clips i have.

Attached: IMG_1806.jpg (2268x3024, 244K)

Yeah, I actually had more problems with my pomona clip than with the cheap ones.

I'm not sure how you'd do it in udev but you can use xmodmap to change it for X (for me on X230 remapping keycode 156 to Escape works but you'll have to find your keycode with 'xev' if it's not the same.
I honestly am not experience with this at all but putting 'keycode 156 = Escape' in ~/.Xmodmap and then loading that seems to work.

more info there because I'm going to sleep.
picrel is what I see from xev.

This might be it. Thanks my friend

ok I guess it's not working
I will try the soldering idea
(unless these erase failures are normal?)

Attached: IMG_20190411_214745.jpg (3971x1501, 1.33M)

you got the wrong chip try a different one

chip?

flashrom detects several macronix chip names.select a different and it'll probably work if not choose another one

Attached: Screenshot from 2019-04-11 18-55-37.png (740x193, 60K)

Where do you guys get your SOIC Clips? I went to Microcenter (Like Frys but prominent in the Midwest) and the sales staff just gave me a strange look and told me they would not be able to help me.... Also, how can a newfag to hardware hacking get into Libreboot? or even coreboot? on a T420 ATM and love it I just hate how trash the stock BIOS is.

no I'm pretty sure I'm good on that front, I can see the number on mine

i guess you aren't good on that front cause it would've erased properly. try a different chip

I'm

when i falshed my x200 and x201 i didn't even check what name was printed on the chip i choose at random and got the same error as you did. and i tried a different chip and it worked

ok, yeah I guess I'm being retarded, if the wires werent actually all touching the pins flashrom wouldn't give me a list of shit it detects, which it does. I'll try a random different one

W520 masterrace

Nothing beats this! I'm so in love :)

Attached: Screenshot_20190404-233901_Camera.png (1080x2246, 1.9M)

Yes, it has just as many horizontal pixels as the 30 inch 2560x1600 panels I have on my desk. It's nice having all of that space. I usually have websites zoomed to 133%, but I can read most things comfortably without scaling. I had a 1080p screen hacked in before I upgraded to the 1440p screen.

Stop posting pictures of your bong

no

Attached: dudeweedlmao.png (366x625, 147K)

Well which screen and how'd you do it?

did you get it working? might wanna try a slower spispeed too

evidently not
it does say erase/write done though
I'll turn it on and see
("found 0x00" looks discouraging though)

I really want a 1440p screen on my t530. You think it can be done?

looks like it went through fine

Attached: IMG_20190411_234538.jpg (2042x1960, 717K)

I ordered a 1440p mod board from taobao through a forwarding service, it redirects a displayport from the docking connector to an edp cable you can connect to a 1440p screen. This board also adds a SATA3 msata port you can install instead of the expresscard slot, but I haven:t put that in yet.

I got the panel off of ebay, the model number is LQ125T1JW02. It was supposed to come with mounting brackets, but the seller sent me the version of the panel without brackets, so I had to cut the brackets off of the tn 1366 display and use the adhesive strips to attach them to this display, along with mounting the brackets upside down and bending some tabs to get it to fit. If you get a panel with brackets, you just need to dremmel out the antenna routing bits at the bottom of the inside of the lid to get the panel to fit, just like the FHD mod.

Attached: file.png (1280x720, 1.15M)

I know there's a 1440p mod for the t430s, I'm not sure about the t530.

I want a 4:3 screen thinkpad for classic gaming with XP. Suggestions?
Mostly unreal and quake engine games. I still have my Nocturne and Daikatana cds.

I bought a replacement keyboard for my t510 but could never get the mouse drivers to work correctly. Is it a counterfeit part maybe?

It would prevent me from left clicking (all clicks register as right clicks) unless I use an external mouse... Or something to that effect.

This issue persisted after a software restore on windows 7 and upgrade to Windows 10.

Should I buy another keyboard or just throw the machine in the donation pile?

Was top of the line in its day 9 years ago. Don't recall what i5 it has in it but it had the good screen and dedicated gpu.

Since then I've got a t420s to bang around with, and have a pretty deluxe x1 extreme on order so I'm kind of over the old shit.

Should I just donate those and buy a semi recent x series to use as my beater?

Also, I ordered my x1 extreme with the 1tb pcie drive. Can I throw a 2tb sata drive in the other m.2 slot or does it need to be pcie too? The specs say both are supported.

Full disclosure, I spilled beer all over the t510 so maybe something other than the physical keyboard got borked? Everything else works fine. Also the ram is weak capacity I'd rather just donate it.

Thinkpad T60 is 4:3 with a Mobility Radeon x1400.
>crack... sip....

>Daikatana
that reminded me that Sigil was delayed. I'm still waiting on my physical copy.

glad to see that you got it working

Check out Wrath: Aeon of Rune, 3DRealms is using the quake engine. Also their Ion Maiden game is pretty cool.

Hey guys, user who was looking for the differences between the T420 Samsung panel and LG panel. Can someone tell me? Is one glossy?

what's the most powerful cpu you can put inside a t420?

Attached: 1554884240659.jpg (720x850, 92K)

i7–3840QM

Is that pic for real? smdh.

Current W541 user. Looking to upgrade or sidegrade to something with only a dedicated gpu as optimus has been problematic for me. Suggestions for similar range hardware?

Attached: zbyy0haapdk21.jpg (2602x3903, 831K)

I broke my T420 like a retard today, and ordered a T500 as a replacement. Glad to be moving up to a 16:10 screen, but not happy about having to spend $60 out of nowhere.

Attached: 20190411_152316.jpg (2409x2268, 2.92M)

you should install a 1080p screen in the t420

If it was just a screen replacement issue, I'd have gone with that, but the whole thing stopped working.

Attached: Clipboard - April 5th, 2019 12_01_45 PM.png (599x592, 311K)

What happens when you connect an external display? Replacement motherboards are pretty cheap.

Nothing. The monitor recognized that it was connected to something, but whatever I did, I couldn't get it to work.
I figured if I could buy a T500 for $60 and throw in whatever parts are still working from my T420, it'd be cheaper than attempting a repair.

Attached: 20190411_152316.jpg (2409x2268, 3.77M)

I didn't mean cheaper, my bad. I meant I'd be happier with it

where do you get 1440p screens for it?

Where can I find a used thinkpad sold that doesn't have bright spots or scratches on the screen?
Ive owned several laptops through my life and not one has a screen defect caused by me. Surely there are some previous owners that arent fucking trogs. x1 carbon or x-series prefered.

I got the screen on ebay for $65, and the mod board on taobao for $30.

aaaaaaa why can't I stop shopping for laptops I don't even leave the house

Nope I'm on both

I want to buy x1 carbon. Does gen 7 bring anything significant? If not, I might just wait for the release and get 6th gen on discount

Proper CPU cooling hopefully 6th gen has thermal issues

an incremental upgrade
that's because intel brands 45w tdp cpu as 15w and lenovo allows it use full 45w, even with throttling you still get more performance than competition that often chains these cpus to 25w max

Need a Thinkpad with 2GB VRAM, are there models that will let me allocate 2GB of my regular RAM to the IGP?

if you are talking about a thinkpad that will let you hard allocate 2gb of ram to igp in bios then there are none, but that's nothing to worry about igp will automatically allocate any amount of ram it needs, the maximum amount of ram igp can allocate to itself is total system ram divided by 2 if you run dual channel, so for example with 8gb of dual channel ram, igp can allocate maximum of 4gb to itself

"Incremental" as in "we added new gen of cpu, ram and screen" or "incremental" as in "its a bigger number fuck you buy it"?

they refreshed kaby lake refresh as whiskey lake so the cpu now has higher turbo boost but it's unsustainable so it barely matters except for very short workloads, other than that it's pretty much the same thing, slightly slimmer, slightly lighter but nothing really worth talking about

I also saw they are putting 4k screen on new ones. Worth it or not?

I'd say it's questionable, I have 1440p on my 14 inch laptop and it's great but I think that going for even higher resolution would result in diminishing returns, but I never had 4k display on such a small panel so I can't say for sure, it's up to you

I see, thanks.

I also have doubts, hence the question.

Thanks for the info

Heres a dilemma
Buy a T450s for 270$
>Core i5-5300U 2.3Ghz
>8GB RAM
>128GB SSD
or buy parts to fully refurbish X230?

get a t430

Bemp for my questin

Attached: 1553647873725.gif (491x492, 360K)

Im cant decide if I want an x1, t440s or just a desktop replacement like the t530

Id mostly be using it for learning to code/ light gaming

I have bought 1 used laptop, X230. Bought it like 3 weeks ago. It's in so mint condition, absolutely no wear signs on the inside, only lid has some scratches. I had to ask the company that sold me that have they changed any parts on it. They answered that only keyboard MIGHT have been changed, if the laptop came from other country (I live in EU). He said that most of the used laptops they sell are from companies that use their laptops docked 24/7, so they don't get much wear. So I suggest trying to find laptops in business use rather than consumer bought ones.

My question is what thermal paste do you guys use on Thinkpads? I read that many of the ones performing good on PCs might not be ideal for laptops, since laptop might need thicker paste because of more uneven heatspreaders. Also long lasting ones would be more ideal for laptops. I was considering Phobya NanoGrease Extreme.

Attached: the-test-of-27-thermal-compounds-part-2-00.jpg&sp=a708b4cdb7ec130dfbe9da7439dfb20c.jpg (3840x2550, 1.14M)

I already have an T420s and X230 and so Im wondering if T450s is worth the price

Bought a refurb t480s for 1.1k. I7-8650u, WQHD screen, 256 GB NVMe SSD, 16GB RAM, 1 year depot warranty. My use case is systems engineering, so plenty of VMs. I also travel a lot. Whatcha think /tpg/, did I get a good deal? The same configuration new would be over 1.6k after tax.

links pls?

Where did you get it from?
Im looking on ebay and most sellers are ones selling previously leased laptops, which have been heavily used

Just some company that sells new and used laptops. In Finland. Also over payed alot for it but didn't really care

I need some help quick
>ThinkPad destroyed in a chemical accident
>got drenched in hydrochloric acid
>keyboard cold, trackpad cold, LCD destroyed
>have no money to buy parts to fix or another one
>the only laptop I have I can use is an edge with a motherboard problem I can't diagnose, no ram, fan or HDD
I'm totally fucked. What should I do?

>T42 with the 14.1" SXGA+ display for $25
Should I? Is there anything that can be done with a single core CPU nowadays?
You can enable "Discrete Graphics" only mode in the BIOS
It might fuck up a bit with your installation if you're using wangblows, though, since for some stupid reason, dGPU only mode needs a driver reinstall even though the drivers are already on the system. Really activates the almonds

No regrets.
Pretty good dankpad.
