Focus

How do you keep focus while programming?
My focus doesn't last more than 30 minutes

If you have to ask, programming is not for you

You have ADHD.

but I am unironically a CS major and have a programming job

stop being nervous and stop thinking too much shit in your head. think about programming & what the fuck you wanna do.

you need one of them chink escorts to give you shoulder rubs and kisses on the cheek for motivation

How do I deal with ADHD?

get stimulant drugs from your doctor

Vyvanse

by not posting pepe and wojak images on here

I forgot the second part, don't take them, sell them to other people for a profit. Then stop being a programmer and become a drug dealer.

Music helps, stop browsing 4channel helps

I thought that only having dedicated focus for 30 minutes was a normal person thing and that people who can focus for an activity for hours on end are the unusual ones?

You know people have jobs they do almost everyday for many hours at a time, right? Not being able to focus for more than 30 minutes is unusual

Install a blocker application such as FocalFilter

Idk I just do it.

People have things that they can use as distractions though, they can stop to use the bathroom or at least take a quick drink of water. Having dedicated focus for hours is a trait that the general population lacks. It's probably not true of the average person on Jow Forums though but it's not a sign of a developmental issue.

No problem, you should take a 5 minute break every 30 minutes and stretch your legs, else you will get sever back problems later in life.

>know music theory and have the ear to listen to chord progressions
>cant stop focusing on the same 5 generic cadances in most songs
>cant resist stopping to process more complex songs
what now buddy

this. just take a short break.

stimulants are a bad meme, not suggested. you don't have the willpower to work more than 30 minutes, you think you won't become an addict?

not op but thanks for this suggestion user

Thos is actually a good thing like said.
Search for The Pomodoro Technique

when looking at screens, always use the 20/20/20 rule. every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds
also stay hydrated

>How do you keep focus while programming?
By having the deadline yesterday.
Seriously.

Vyvanse didn't work for me, I went up to 60mg and it did fuck all

Take a 5 minute break after 30 mins

I’m on the opposite end. I’ll start programming and then four hours will go by like nothing. It’s perfect for just killing time and not thinking about her.

This. If you actually do hav ADHD you should hav the ability to hyperfocus and just forget about everything

this is just not true
even if I am focused in programming, I would just be obsessed with context switching, like looking for different libraries, open source projects etc..

ADHD fag here. What I do, with and without meds:
1. Think about what to do. (Usually I think in middle-sized steps of 1-5 days likely completion time)
2. Separate that into smaller subtasks.
3. Then pick one and seperate that into even smaller tasks of 5-15 minutes. Pick one or two of those and do them in your 30 minutes. Repeat.

Also I heavily use pen and paper when planning, I find that deep thinking in front of a screen yelling 50+ distractions at me does not work for me. I plan, then I use the computer to execute my plan.

as a fellow adhd user. you kinda got to force yourself until you get into "a zone" then it becomes easy (since when you enter it, the only thing you can focus on is your code.)

Coffee and modafinil (usually 100mg)

I take Adderall
If that's not available I harness my anxiety to drive me into a panic where I must work or else
The latter isn't recommended, but works in a pinch

damascus mail and coil beta

ADHD isn't real

I don't have ADHD

There's good evidence on both sides of this argument. If it is real, I am one of the people who have it and I can say it doesn't matter if it's real. Bottom line is my dopamine receptors are fucked to the point where I am also in OPs position where I can't focus for extended periods on certain tasks, while others I can go for hours on end.

I have tried plenty of tricks to help my dopamine receptors recover and nothing really helps. Haven't drank soda in 2 years, Adderall in 2 years, Weed in 1.5 Years. I only fap every 3rd day to prevent further damage to my receptors but none of these really solve the main issue of focus. Distraction can still ruin my life.

I am thinking about picking up coffee like the normies and just abusing it. I am out of ideas for ADHD productivity.

fear. fear is the only way. you should have some real risks if you don't do your task. like you should lose your income/house, or your screen should be broadcast to someone randomly, things like that.

Man, I didn't realize how many people actually had ADHD here, or are you guys fucking around

>ADHD
>Hyper focus
Is this bait?

ADHD here. Can confirm that this works.

I have adhd and i can hyperfocus when the task is engaging/frustrating enough (I can get into a flow state) and it is late at night. At that point I dont need any adderall or tricks, I can just work infinitely until my body starts shutting down basically.

Try the pomodoro technique like one or two other anons recommended ITT - Forest App (mobile app) is the best one when it comes to keeping u accountable (tomato timer is far inferior but it is free and web based so there's that).

That being said that dopamine receptor shit sounds like broscience I would somehow double check if you are actually that fucked.

Most repetitive and simplistic musical genres in order from most repetitive/simplistic to least:

field recordings > drone > berlin school ambient > dub = dub techno = detroit techno = minimal techno

there you go, listen to those - most of them aren't even tonal so good luck getting distracted by recognizing familiar music scales.

EDIT: I would also put new age music on the same level of berlin school ambient. Here are some really great japanese new age albums that are perfect for focusing:

this tomato method works for me:
3x 20 minutes focus then 5 minutes something else
the 4th time you do make a break of 20 minutes. do ad infinitum.
???
profit

also do sports, eat healthy

EDIT: shit i forgot the best one:

Do not absolutely fall for the drugs meme. Losing focus after 30 mins is normal when you're doing something in your free time and even during work, if you don't have strict schedules your body and mind will always try to relax. Try taking breaks when losing focus, especially going for a walk, eating something away from your workzone or talking with someone about unrelated stuff. Building focus and patience takes years, don't push yourself too much.

Weeeeeeed!
Seriously, stops you from getting bored.

videogames really fucks people up

>work
Imagine your boss looking over your shoulder
>home
Put a pair of anime tits on screen next to your text editor

>It’s perfect for just killing time and not thinking about her.
Based

This is correct As for me, it is learn to love it as you cannot avoid it. Think about how much you love typing code, read and try to love everything relate to your project
After a while you will regain your focus and back to work.
My work time
30min+5 min Jow Forums+ 10 min reading research paper relate to my proj + 30 min manga or anime > back to work and repeat

By not having shit parents and being actually raised instead of being left to play with toys so I would shut up and not bother them.

Programming socks help keep blood flow concentrated in brain.

This is the real truth that nobody talks about and can't really be solved
This is also true. It's sad how important parenting is but there's no way to undo the damage done by shitty parenting.

If I lose focus, I look at porn to get my energy back up and transmute the boner into focus

Sometimes I feel like I have to drink an energy drink to maintain focus on something that isn't physical. If I don't I end up spending a lot of time staring the ceiling or mindlessly browsing the internet.

i was playing vidya 25 hours a week at minimum for years, then i just uninstalled everything i played. if vidya is fucking you up you can actually just uninstall and never play again. it was kind of hard to decide to do, but honestly looking back vidya is pure shit and i never feel like i want to start again. also when i have work i DONT just work on it whenever anymore. i pick times to work on it ahead of time and absolutely work during that time no matter what, if you i to do something else in the middle of it i keep working instead.

Take breaks nigga. Humans weren't meant to stare into a blue light screen for hours on end.

This can work well for you. Take a walk around teh house or outside every 30 minutes for 5 minutes then get back to it. Listen to some music if that helps you.

I have been on this cycle of "starting to learn, then simply not coming back to learn more the next day"
I was supposed to be learning python or java with a book but for some reason I just keep forgetting or flat out ignoring to come back the next day

Rube Goldberg that shoots you with a gun if you don't code fast enough

>screen yelling 50+ distractions at me
Why is your screen yelling distractions at you? All you need is a text editor, a terminal for running code, and maybe a browser for reading docs. None of those should be so much as blinking unless you are actively pressing buttons.
Everything wants to spam you with push notifications these days, but you can turn them off

Also, pro tip: keep a separate browser profile for reading docs, and never ever ever open Jow Forums/HN/reddit/other timewasting sites in that profile. Once those sites get into your address bar tab complete or recently-used icons, it gets much easier to open them up without really thinking about it and then waste a bunch of time.
