Look up "EURion constellation". If the pattern is found in your image, it recognizes as a bank note.

...furthermore, if you reproduce this pattern yourself in a non banknote image, you've just created a form of DRM that prevents your image from being used in many image editors or even copied on many photocopiers.

This is interesting. I guess it cannot be of any use for the common man. At most you can prank your colleagues by giving them a "DRM-ed" image and want them to use it in some sort of project.

The way crop works in Gimp makes more sense for photos. In Krita cropping can expand the canvas.

you should send the image to adobe and let them know that its clearly not an image of a bank note that your trying to open, and their software just wont do it. Their software simply does not do what it claims to do.
