Do USB Noise Isolators work?
I recently got a pair of fairly highly resolving active studio monitors, and I am now picking up what sounds like a ground feedback loop from the USB port on my computer (via a Schiit Modi DAC). I know it's this because 1) There is no such sound from the Optical input, and 2) There is no such sound from my laptop's USB
Do these things work? Is there any risk to them?
No I don't care about being limited to 24/96
Snake oil thread

found your problem
I've also read that powered USB hubs work for this as well. Would it be to the same effect or only "kind of"? I guess it makes sense because you're taking the power / ground away from the USB controller and back to the mains, but I don't want to drop $30 and have it not work.
I know it's not this because I remember knocking off a ground pin on my USB 3 header for my PC when I was building it a few years back and that's the only output that produces this noise, so it has to be that and not the DAC (happens with my FiiO K1 as well)
I googled that big IC and found some documentation
So, newfag to electronics here (first semester studying at a community college) but it seems yeah this product is actually doing something. The IC and the filter caps are isolating your power source from your signal.
Yes, I use one for USB SDR and I can actually see the difference on the spectrum.
Be sure you get a proper one, not a cheap chink shit.
>Schiit
Bad choice of DAC.
Not OP but the Modi 3 is a legitimately good DAC. the Magni 3 is a "meh" amp at best and the knob is horrendous, but the Modi 3 is a fine purchase.
*as long as you are outputting DirectSound or WASAPI to USB, ASIO over USB has some issues I believe but ASIO works fine over Optical and Coax so it's a non-issue.
>unshielded plastic case
Doesn't that defeat the purpose?
wouldn't it be easier to use a new USB header? Or why not just use the USB ports on the back? put your keyboard on the front panel one.
When I plug my guitar amp to my audio interface I got some noise.
I bought something like this for 20$ and doesn't have any noise.
worth it.
I mean I guess, but I'm suspecting that lack of ground is somehow leaking elsewhere (I don't know how this shit works) but I suppose I could try just unplugging it and seeing if the back ports are fixed that way... If not maybe there's a bad cap or the board is just noisy.
If the buzzing is coming from the back ports, then yeah it's 100% the board. Might have to get a sound card.
Yeah I'm just gonna give this isolator a shot since I fell for the mini ITX meme and would rather have a GPU than a sound card (plus that's partly why I purchased my DAC in the first place, to have the equivalent of a dedicated sound card)
Why anyone would buy into the shiit meme is beyond me. Don't people find it strange that they only do guerilla marketing and paid Internet shilling from clueless influencers?
I have the same issue with my Schiit Modi Multibit, using an isulated cable with ferrite bead/core on both end does help on the USB interface, but I just can't stand it so I just run optical from my PC tower. PC towers are a cestpool of electronic interference, and if I run it via my laptop then the static is way less.
My shiit dac used to constantly "switch off", like I would listen to music and suddenly there would be a pop sound and all sound would dissapear though the dac is still powered. I thought its a problem with house electrical wiring and surges but after I bought powered usb hub from amazon (amazon basics brand) because I needed more usb ports, after plugging the dac into the hub the problem dissapeared.
USB is digital, not analog. Noise on the line won't matter. In fact, switching from analog to USB for your speakers can make a world of difference in getting rid of line noises; as example.
How come none of you faggots use TOSLINK instead. Take the fiber-optic pill, and live a noise free life.
>usb speakers
As example. There's also USB "sound cards" but that's getting further off topic.
this is incorrect
in theory it makes sense since USB is a digital connection, so there is no "noise" as existed in analog connections. BUT, USB carries power as well. when you have power you (should) have a ground, and this can lead to a ground loop in some setups, hence the noise people claim to hear.
this is fixed with a $10 DC to DC isolator like OP posted (or a powered USB hub since you remove the ground from the USB source). anyone who pays more for "USB cleansers" or "Power Conditioners" or any of that nonsense is a dummy, but yes it is absolutely a real phenomenon.
just get an ungrounded usb cable
no because I want to use my fancy looking red anker cable
intona is only decent usb isolator
who's the girl (male)
>$240
SEPARATING THE GROUND FROM A USB PATH IS A MINDBLOWINGLY EASY THING TO DO AND DOES NOT REQUIRE SUCH AN INVESTMENT. YOU ARE BRAINDEAD IF YOU BELIEVE OTHERWISE.
for this to work you will need usb adapter cable and external 5v dc supply
lol retard
you think that you can just cut ground on usb cable
>implying you can't do just that and get exactly the same result
most of usb dac’s need usb power for usb input even if they have internal power supply for the rest of electronic.
trap B gone
who is this boy
>boy
you guys are funny
>Do these things work?
no. and i'll explain why:
this dense faggot is on the right track but it has nothing to do with USB. it has everything to do with the GARBAGE and cheaply made electronics people are plugging into their USB ports, so they have to resort to using an incredibly simple filter made out of $2 of parts.
ITT: clueless audio faggots too broke to buy decent gear
why you gotta be like this
>he doesn't know about common mode conversion and the effects on SI
Any particular reason you aren't just using optical from your PC? It solves exactly this problem, and you've confirmed it works. If you don't have native optical out, cheap USB adaptors are widely available.
At this point it's not -really- an issue but I was using all 3 inputs on my DAC, so I just had to spend a bit of time rethinking my setup. Bought a $15 one from Nobsound on Amazon just to see if it works, though.
Is there any other group of people on earth more retarded than audiophiles?
Even niggers are smarter than audiophiles
Like shy would you even bother with that shit?
$240?
For less than $40 you could gerry-rig up an MG set from parts on aliexpress and actually be 100% properly galvanically isolated.
Don't get me wrong, audiophools are retarded, but nothing beats freetards and even then among the freetards - elispers are the worst.
caring about getting a good signal is vastly different than the fools who spend thousands of dollars on gear
>Macs allow me to be more productive!
>fixing ground loops makes me a macfag
hmm
>usb
I have audio jacks.
