Nobody does. If you have two applications open, you put one on half of the screen and the other on the other half. That's why more recent version of Windows/more recent DEs allow you to easily snap windows to take up half or 1/4th of the screen. Older environments are basically unusable once you start doing that because you get so used to doing it.
