Do we need real modern hardware?

I use core2duo + 2gb ram and linux from scratch.
Dwm - window manager
Lynx - web browser.
MPD + cmus - music
VIM + bash - programming

you know, not everyone uses computers to write simple code, has the time to compile it for several hours and shitposts on Jow Forums in the meanwhile.

How much do you make

Yes, old screens are shit

>Do we need real modern hardware?
But, there is none. Can you name me any? How's USB different from Serial/Parallel? Its not, its more or less just Softwarewise, and the rest is just optimizied short circuits but based on the same Technology. Same goes for any CPU, it never changed, circuits just got smaller and thus faster, thats just it

It depends on what you do. I use an x200 tablet for my main school computer but I don’t really do much on it other than browse the web, do homework, write papers, listen to music, etc. I wouldn’t expect it to be able to any serious video editing or anything.

>2gb
I can't imagine a world with less than 4 gb
2gb might work if you are a minimalist (i'm not), but you can always do much more with like 8gb

>Do we need real modern hardware

Depends on what you want to do. There are plenty of applications that even a Windows XP era PC could still do just fine. Technology is constantly progressing though, and it gets to the point that even menial, basic, general programs need some level of up-to-date hardware to function well.

>VIM
Ew.

I use a similar low spec machine, only struggle is when I'm doing CAD work, so VNC into the box upstairs.

Kek, try training a neural net on that, fgt

Googling it shows that's more than 10 years old CPU.

If you really want to legit retro experience might as well install os meant for it like dos and similar apps.

Not very useful though.

EVERYTHING IS MADE OF METAL AND HAS ELECTRICITY SO IT'S ALL THE SAME SHIT USB=PCIE=WIFI
The point of new software and slightly different hardware is that you can do things faster

>t. brainlet
enjoy your bloated botnet

It's threads like these that remind me why Jow Forums is such a consumerist whore board.

Unemployed manbaby. Of course.

>why don't you want your cpu to run at 85C while idle reeeeee

Vim is the brainlet text editor, you stupid zoomer.

Yes you fucking asshole people do work and need powerful fast computers to be more productive.
Stop living in a bubble.

How are you posting here with lynx?

depends from needs, but mostly it's enough to have i5 from 2013 and 8gb of ram and good Nvidia graphic

If you actually do any work worth some computing power you log in to a remote server anyway.

Install Emacs.

go back to your stupid IDEs, nobody cares about your wagecuck java opinions.

Uh, no, vimlet. I am an Emacs user. So don't get uppity with me.

A 2GHz Core2 Duo is fine for basic web browsing in the latest Chromium and if you have 4GB RAM and an SSD you can run any desktop environment, including KDE Plasma. My main workstation is using a Q9550 Core2 Quad, 16GB RAM, a 500GB SSD, and it's nearly perfect for what I do. Though I have a heavier work flow now that will eventually require a second monitor, so the GMA 4500 iGPU won't be enough to drive two displays. I'll need a proper low profile graphics card.

>not using a retrofit motherborad
what's the point of choosing a crappy specced x200 over a not crappy specced one?

Any calculation can be done using an abacus. Everything else is bloat.

>anybody trying to having intelligent conversation on the kindergarten playground that are imageboards in general, let alone the vermin-filled shitshow that is 4chin

but the other anons are right- different hardware for different uses. halting researching into bigger, better, smaller, etc. would halt development of new things, whatever they may be

The ultra-comfy-lazyman's way of doing things:
Xfce - WM/DE
Firefox - web browser
YouTube - music (because I just don't want to download every god damn song I like or open another window for MPV)
Kate + Bash/C/Python - programming

I primarily use a desktop, with a mouse that has 12 side buttons all bound to specific things like changing/creating tabs for my terminal/editor/browser, opening/focusing my terminal/browser/file manager and other things I usually do with a mouse.

From my experience I've found laptops are best with a window manager and a fuckload of keybinds, where desktops are best with a full DE (xfce/kde) and some keybinds with most of them being on the mouse

Also mouse keybinds can easily be made to do multiple things based on context just as easily as regular keyboard keybinds
#!/bin/bash
case "$(xdotool getactivewindow getwindowname)" in
*"Firefox Developer Edition"*|"Terminal"*|*"Dolphin")
[[ $1 -eq 0 ]] && mod_keys='Ctrl+Page_Up'
[[ $1 -eq 1 ]] && mod_keys='Ctrl+Page_Down'
;;
*"Kate")
[[ $1 -eq 0 ]] && mod_keys='Alt+Left'
[[ $1 -eq 1 ]] && mod_keys='Alt+Right'
;;

esac
xdotool key "${mod_keys}"

If that's all you want to do, it'll be fine.
Would be faster on a more modern machine though.

I upgraded from my x200 to a x270 because I was sick of slow compilation speeds. Worked fine for python development though.

bait harder zoomer

>Do we...
Who is we?

>linux
yuck

Trannyboot

If software wasn't bloated to fuck then we'd need far less than we think we do.

not that guy, but I use vim and emacs. separately. No evil-mode for me.

What is bad about Vim?.

how do you even post here? or are you just larping muh minimalism

nothing, he's just some emacs shill

not him but see pic related.

Try easystroke. Superior to mouse keybinds. Also lightweight.

I can think of a few problems with this (aside from the obvious of requiring more hand movements)
>on webpage
>select some text
>move mouse in the shape of a dick
>changes tab
>text on other tab is still selected
Not a very efficient method desu-chan

>bloat
vim stands for vi improved.
emacs stands for 8mb and currently swapping.

>window manager
>web browser
>music
>programming
Listening to music is the only thing you do that's obviously outside the problem domain of computers themselves. And your music player is the only piece of software not entirely written against early terminal devices for PDP 11's.
Using computers for the sake of using computers is kind of masturbatory. The real question is, what do you need a c2d and 2GB of RAM for when you could do everything you do with an ancient minicomputer and an mp3 player?

Until a year ago I was actually drawing my loli porn with a laptop not much stronger than yours. It had a stylus-enabled screen though, and a good reason to display more than 16 colors.

What about captcha?

What is captcha?

Now that you're dumpster diving for laptops (and food) you can finally afford the Jow Forums pass!

go jerk off to your Gnu/linux fanfic faggot

These are my thoughts exactly. Most of what I want to do on my computer is reading, writing and programming, and all this other stupid bullshit just hijacks my reward circuits and distracts me from what I really want to do.

One of my long term goals is to build just such a machine, an "un-computer", if you will.

mycpu.eu/
homebrewcpuring.org/
To what extent are you willing to go to build your own private masturbatory computing utopia?

that still doesnt answer my question, captcha here requiers javascript

If you planing to use anything that's made after 2015, then get a real powerful hardware.
Even W520 struggle with 1080p HEVC videos.
And simply opening a social media sites makes everything so slow.

How much did it cost in total? That is a really nice CPU.

We do OP, we really do. I do quite a bit of vector poster design and hardware like that just doesn't cut it anymore.
