I think it has to do with how much Apple products cost, or at least it did a couple years ago.
When you spend 1000$ on a phone instead of 200, the thing HAS to be good. If it doesn't, you're a retard who blew all his money on useless shit. So you keep believing harder.
It's actually a common scam strategy when you target businesses : once you've tricked the money guy into buying your snake oil, he can either admit he fucked up and get fired or keep buying more hoping the boss won't find out.

I actually got an iPad as a gift last year. I tried it for a week before realizing it was useless so I sent it back to the Apple store saying I wanted to upgrade it to the newest released model so I could get a shrink wrapped one to sell as new.
When I asked the salesman if I needed to unlock it he said not to worry about it. Knew it had to be super easy to unlock them if they were like that.
