If you only have it in RAM, it'll obviously all get flushed.

Linux has multiple methods to conveniently mirror the RAMdisk stuff to a HDD though. (Obviously, you can't do it in the absurd case where you have 60GB/s or something in writes, but that's probably not your Gentoo usage).

I use this from a USB drive when I install gentoo. I use the system rescue cd usb image, run from ram. It is a great tool.

I'd recommend system rescue cd even to install gentoo, it's great overall.
