OP here. That is literally dead-on how it went. I was really close to getting an hp zbook for him. i7-6700 with 256ssd, 16gb ram, 2gb card, etc. He couldve got the docking station for it too and used it as a desktop if he wanted.

Got my laptop in 2011 for college and still have it and it's still in usable condition without ever replacing or upgrading anything besides the battery. I have nothing against an expensive laptop if you can keep something that long. When the battery goes flat it could become a media center or desktop when hooked to a display. But that's my concern with this generation of MacBooks. I see even Apple fans hold these macs with distaste they're so bad. Also you should've known he was set on an Apple and helped him find the best deal instead of buying it off some guy. Make sure he knows about Apples education pricing on software.

I won't always have access to power in classrooms, so it needs good battery life.
I write a lot of C++ so it needs a decently fast processor and plenty of memory to support constant unit testing (TDD master race).

What's the best laptop that is:
13 inches and 3 pounds or lighter;
5+ hours of battery life;
2Ghz dual core or better;
8GB RAM minimum - 16GB preferred;

A/N/S comptia + CCNA certified computer/network tech with 4 grueling years of experience here: Most people are dumb AS FUCK when it comes to technology. I don't give a shit if they're a doctor, lawyer, welder, chef, ect: chances are they're hopelessly tech illiterate and therefore easy to persuade to buy X.

I've had tickets come in where people with a serious face come ask me if their new mouse pad is compatible with their PC, where the "any" key is located, why can't 10+ computers/phones/tablets be connected to a single fucking 300N wifi router and function at the speed of light, ect ect...

You can't help these people user, they're like this because they don't a fuck about the modern witchcraft that is modern computing and expect everything to JUST werk™ even when they're doing everything wrong. Some of my tech support has been done on the SAME people with the SAME fucking problem that I explained to them on a grade school level way. I want to hurt them so badly but I really really need that paycheck so I just grit my teeth and do my best to wipe away the tears during break. Hopefully someday I get out of this hell hole and become a sysadmin and just dick around watching chink toons 50% of my work day.
