Looking to get a soldering iron to do some minor electronics repairs. Should I pony up $100 for a soldering station with ESD protection from a reputable brand, or will any $15 chinese piece of shit iron do? Mainly for doing through-hole and some easy surface mount joints.
I'm not going to be soldering ICs any time soon, but I'm concerned about damaging them while working elsewhere on the PCB. I guess the more expensive iron should pay itself off after blowing up a few ICs, but spending that much just to get started seems overkill to me unless I turn it into a hobby.
