Sure bass is nice, but if you have a decent pair of full range speakers there is no need for a sub. It will only overemphasize the low frequencies and ruin the tonal balance.

the phantom center only works for the seat that's exactly the same distance from the L and R speakers, and therefore in the middle.
only that person will hear a phantom center source coming from the screen if you only had stereo speakers, so anyone sitting to the left or right side will have center sources like dialogue and whatnot shift over to their side because the distance to one speaker is less than to the other, of course this is more noticeable the bigger the screen size and angle you move out of the sweet spot, but imagine how ridicoulous a cinema would sound if it was set up that way, that's why you have the center speaker that even if you're sitting way to the side and your overall imaging is all kind of fucked up glues your dialogue to the direction of the center of the screen because it's not coming from a phantom source but physically where the center of the screen is
