I use my Desktop for gaming and there is no reason to use BSD aka BaSeD on it.

OpenBSD makes absolutely zero sense on anything that isn't a server exposed to the internet and where security is paramount.
On a workstation, or a production machine, it offers no advantages at all over GNU/Linux.

i use windows (dual boot, but mostly windows) on my desktop and linux on my laptop

i'd probably only use linux if the nvidia drivers didn't suck dick for my setup

On each of the Thinkpads I've compared, Linux has better battery life, sometimes by hours. But I use tlp and configure the shit out of it.

OOB with no tlp it could be worse but why wouldn't you set up tlp if you want better battery life? I've never tried comparing defaults.

OpenBSD has worse battery life than either Windows or Linux but not by much. I get 10-12 hours out of my x201 with tlp and 8-10 out of the same machine with the same battery in OpenBSD.

Without tlp, running a lightweight distro like debian lost to win7 on a T410 but with tlp loonix was slightly better.
Better performance from running GNU+Linux though.

Obviously not controlled test results so they don't mean much but luckily battery life is pretty good on Gnu's Not Unix! + Linux these days.

When Half Life 3 finally comes out and it's Linux only it's going to be hilarious.

I can get a whole day's runtime out of my x201 so I'm happy. I do wish I could set charging thresholds with OpenBSD though. But the x201's chink batteries are only like $20 and have no DRM like newer Thinkpad batteries so I don't mind buying a new one every two years or so.

If you have a low-tier notebook I'd say Linux all the way.
If you have a mid-tier laptop to do some gaming and don't have to use any Windows-specific software then you can use a Linux distro for everything (even for gaming, at the intermediate level Proton and Wine will run basically anything and most indies have Linux ports). The advantages of using a Linux distro are: it's more customizable, you can avoid MS botnet, it's generally faster and you have total control over your sytem and can choose when to update, reboot etc.
If you have a GAMING laptop, then you are better off with Windows (tho Linux is catching up).

For desktops, well, I'll assume it's a modern desktop able to do some AAA gaming; if you want to play AAA videogames Windows is still the best option, but Linux is getting closer with Proton and Wine. If you need to work with Windows-specific software, then pick Windows. If you don't check for either, then Linux, that's what I'd would choose, see the advantages of using a Linux distro above.
