I never understood using keys over passwords. My passwords are all 20+ chars in a password manager and fail2ban is enabled. If I was using keys I'd have them just saved in the password manager as well. What security do I gain? I'd like to use my Yubikey for public key auth, but it's just so fucking difficult to set up I don't bother.

Shouldn't ssh deny any connections attempting to password authenticate when password authentication is disabled? If you're using keys, it's important to disable password authentication as well.
Keys are unbreakable and revocable. They're in some ways more secure, because unlike with a password which has to physically be sent to the server, with keys your private key is never transmitted. Why would you store ssh keys in a password manager, how would programs using access them?
It's not really difficult to setup (ignoring yubikey and whatever other hardware), just generate a key pair with gpg, use ssh-copy-id to copy your pub key automatically to the server, then finally disable password authentication on the server.
