What tech is there to advance? VNs were always meant to be a lightweight game since they were intended to be a more technological book. In theory a VN can use anything a full fledged game engine could. More flashy tech won't mean the writing is any better though.

If it's made for phones, it could use the camera, phone calls, the compass and other functions I can't think of right now. In the near future AR could become another option. The characters you're talking with standing right there next to you.

There's plenty of VN's with actual gameplay/videogame engines, but I think it misses the point if you try to implement it on VR, why would you make a VR VN when you're seeing the avatars talking next to you, that's just a book anymore it's just normal vr game.

Don't mix up AR with VR. VR is not a good platform for visual novels because it is demanding on the developer. It forces you to model entire worlds, or at least entire rooms. It also means you must have high performance 3D rendering or your players may get sick. AR does not impose those constraints. Once you have tracking that works reliably, you can overlay sprites or anything else on top of the real world. With AR you could actually have dinner or go to the park with your favorite girl in a dating sim, for example, and you wouldn't vomit because she wasn't rendered at 90 FPS.
