You know there is a difference between connection to tracker and connection to peer, right? Your torguard check shows the one you're connecting to a tracker

I downloaded a single seed torrent from myself as well and my own IP didn't show up, it was a tor exit node.

I saw the box, which doesn't always mean it works as intended.
If you tested it (although I would've just sniffed traffic with wireshark to be sure it doesn't try to ping anything outside tor), fine for you.

I'm and I maxed out my connection (only 3MB/s) but still.
Tor uses a few exit nodes at a time, so even if one is slow you should have more.

Not OP, but I use utorrent with Vidalia and the connection is as good as without Tor most of the time. No proofs though, because I live in Russia, and Tor is against the law here.

All of those issues are not issues in qbittorrent, and after searching, qbit devs talks about using Tor and explicitly about the settings mentioned in the blogpost.
And in the blogpost they're basically saying "thank god for this """exploit""" (retarded devs), we need to save our bandwidth".
Most likely this is where the meme comes from and it's still living strong to this day.
