Is there an actual good way of doing this that doesn't involve cloud shit or configurations 99% of people won't have kludged their phones into supporting? Ideally without even involving a LAN or cell network.
There used to be a feature of android phones where you'd touch two phones together and they could transfer files through nfc or something, but every manufacturer had to have their incompatible special snowflake version of it rendering it useless. Haven't heard of it since.

Bluetooth is pretty simple.
There's also Wifi direct, but you typically need a separate app for the transfer.

I was looking to buy an iPhone, but this is almost a deal breaker. I use NFC tags every day as switches for settings (wifi, bluetooth, silent mode...). I have to unlock the phone for it to work, though, which kinda sucks.

I'm an iPhone user and would defend the iPhone as pretty much the best phone out there. That said it is fucking RIDICULOUS that my phone is sitting next to me right now and I can't just transfer files directly via bluetooth to my computer (or other phones). I can transfer photos or video with airdrop to other phones, but that's about it. This means that any time I use my phone to capture a record of a document using a scanner app or something, I have to upload to to google drive, log onto google drive on my computer, and download it. Even though as I've said my phone is RIGHT HERE. It's a major failing.
