Key chain USB required

Alrighty Jow Forums every single one of you should have these. They should have a live OS of choice on it. Be it WinPE or Linux live CD. From there spare space on it for files (some 7zip encrypted), programs, tools to change admin passwords, ISOs and other items you may need to build your entire system off on any PC you come across.
This is your survival device and it costs $12 and fits on a keychain. There is no excuse. The encrypted 7z can contain a locked libre office spreadsheet of passwords or other important data in case you lose everything. I see too much "muh lenovo" and not enough smart planning.

>spreadsheet of passwords

>Windows 10 RE + installer
>Fedora LiveUSB
>one large USB 3.1 drive for random shit, transfers, etc.

I've also got a portable putty install and encrypted and password protected keys so I can get into my home network from anywhere.

Give me 1 good reason why I would need crap like that?

Have two.
>live boot
emergency maintainence.
>detatched, encrypted LUKS header
>removable dm-crypt key
because security.

Keep a 2.0 device around as well. USB 3./0/1/2 4x4 all wheel drive compatibility issues are a bitch to deal with.

>USB aka UniverSal Backwards compatibilty
>compatibility issues
wat?

Why the fuck would I need that shit seriously? I'm not some kinda CIA/KGB agent of something.

>BIOS/UEFI AKA A fucking piece of shit that nobody does right.
You can't boot sometimes from USB3x keys.

>items you may need to build your entire system off on any PC you come across
And what library in this day and age will let me do that? They all have rules that void your privileges if you "tamper" w/ the computers (which includes rebooting them and booting from live USB).

>live boot
I have a PXE server for that shit.
>because security
Yeah when I think "security" I think "centralize all security within a device that probably has some unremovable BadUSB-style firmware exploit embedded in it"

i have one. looks nice until you use it. polished metal gets all sorts of dented and scratched.

i'd do that but i don't have usb 3 ports

I do this but with a portable m.2 drive with 512 gb on it.
I have a live linux i use when im on the go on laptop(s) and at home on my work station

o p t i m a l

Why not just dual-boot multiple distros on your laptop's HDD? Unless you're going on a plane, that is.

>spreadsheet of passwords

Silence, boomer!

I would do that but setting up partitions for both windows and arch on one drive is a fucking pain.

Also the m2 is portable in that I can lose the laptop or my house can blow up due to some other fuck-shit or I could be out at a friend's house or school work-station and still be able to plug it into a computer and boot from it and get back to work.
I treat laptops and desktops as the "frontend" in a way. And it's super fast. Faster than any shitty flash drive is for sure since it's a full solid state over USB 3.1.

pictured is the 3.0 version btw.
3.1 is a little wider

we /larp/ now

can I store nude tane on it?

>micro USB 3.0
That was such a shitty design. I understand why they did it but I still hate it.

Too bad Kingston made the metal case thinner in the SE9 G2 compared to the original USB2.0 one. They aren't as durable anymore.

I bought a five-pack of 16GB USB drives for $12. Dropped some install and boot images on each of 'em.

now i can install gentoo on unattended computers in the library

>Yeah when I think "security" I think "centralize all security within a device that probably has some unremovable BadUSB-style firmware exploit embedded in it"
That's not exactly what I meant, but OK.

The usb 2.0 were a bit limited in size, I do have the 32 gb on my spare keys.
Booting to a linux or PE was not ment for places that let you use a PC like the library. Getting to your files though is, but more you need a quick PC bought somewhere. Say your house or apartment burnt down. You pickup some used laptop at a pawn shop or off craigslist and are now at a hotel. You can boot your desired linux environment right then and there. Or you can risk the existing OS or if new you have it already installed, but have all the programs needed right on the drive to install without the need for fast network access.

pleb

I've seen what happens when you start having gold on you. It gets out of hand fast.

>hardcoded-on chip chink spyware

No, thanks.

You understand that just about every storage device, motherboard and video card are using Chinese made chips right?

not true mate, try putting a usb 3 _\|glownigger|/_ keyboard into a usb 2 slot on a dell and watch it fail to boot.

>still using flash drives

Good OP post shit thread

>muh shekrit usb hacker archive for on the go tomfoolery
yea, then we all graduated from highschool.

>walking around deploying linux installations on computers you are not authorized to do so on
this is breaking the law and most people are no longer interested in ruining their lives and careers on larping the role of linux hacker.

obligatory pic related.

READ THE THREAD, fuck sake. This is not a hacker thread but a survival thread. A USB drive on your keychain can be a difference between your life going to shit or you having everything available to rebuild it from nothing but a usb drive. I honestly right now cant tell if trolling, jaded or stupid. How do you prove renters, homeowners or car insurance? How do you prove anything after a major loss? How do you keep paying bills well after the event to make sure you are not denied access to a hotel or otherwise? Protect yourselves.

Seriously you are like a high schooler with a credit card, not understanding shit in the world. Never been in a pawn shop or any 2nd hand store.

what if he's really good at reading but actually he is also trying to hack your survival thread?
can you survive this hacking attempt? come up with a way that key chang USB help you now? friend, have calm.

meh dont care, going to sleep in an hour or so. Thread will die, wont give a shit. Hoping I helped as many anons as possible to the fact that with under $15 they can protect all they worked for. (shrug) We do what we can before it is too late.

kek

>Never been in a pawn shop or any 2nd hand store.
why would I buy a used laptop? Thats worse than buying used underwear.
You really want some fags used porn pad that still has his jizz and pubic hair stuck under the keys? used consumer electrics are pigfuck disgusting.

Do you have any real examples of when this would be acceptable?

honestly, jaded.
this as a backup method in inadequate.
You should have proper pictures of all of your things and scans of receipts, serial numbers if there properly documented on the device and receipt.
All of this, plus a proper backup of all of your data should be kept on a secure harddrive (since $12 flash media is still too small for all of that). All identifying marks should be documented too inorder to prove ownership, every single nick and scrape (who even actually does this?)
proper 321 storage is the standard procedure for this type of backup/life recovery plan. 3 copies, 2 onsite (one cold), and 1 offsite.

Nope, got nothing. No reason at all to buy a second hand computer. it is all a farce. Nothing to see here. Move along.

Attached: homeless-laptop.jpg (1024x576, 75K)

Not everyone is a degenerate. Stop projecting.

Homeless people shouldn't be buying laptops. There are public computers where they can apply for jobs.
>using the live iso on the public computer
homeless people, or anyone, should not be allowed to run unverified code on a computer they do not own. This is a security issue. They could be installing a ring0 root kit (not that you know what that even is). Rules preventing people from running their own os and restricting what programs may run on the provided operating system exist for a reason.
With that being said, any proper public computer setup should prevent you from loading the usb os in the first place.

Furthermore, if you are homeless buying an entertainment device is as bad of an investment as a bottle of booze. If they have the $xxx required to by a halfway usable second hand computer, they should instead buy something that would grant them access to facilities to shower, shave, and wash clothes so that they can pass a job interview (obtained through public computer).
This is why you hear "homeless by choice" used often and why most of the time donating to "homeless" people is completely wrong.

Did you meet the fella that owned the laptop before you, give him a firm handshake, and talk well into the evening or are you just trying to negate the fact that used laptops are filthier than any public bathroom you might have the misfortune of winding up in?

What if I did? And what if I can clean my electronics? Dumb kid.

you can never really clean that shit.
>dumb kid
if you were an adult then you would know how pigfuck disgusting that shit is.
go watch some rossmann
