I think the humor was always dark and it always catered to weird / messed up interests (the guro board from back then) and gave people the means to anonymously say things they normally wouldn't, but it seemed like a lot of stuff was done more as a weird sense of humor or light hearted fun at first and then gradually became harder to distinguish the people who would start doing those things earnestly or taking things a lot more serious (e.g going on edgy monologues about why morality doesn't matter).
