All of that extra computing power goes to more and more abstraction layers and frameworks to re-invent the wheel the most inefficient way possible.

If we started targeting actual machines again instead of the abstraction on top of them, what would we lose really?
Imagine also that it's 1 language per machine type. So realistically you'd have to know x86 and what, maybe ARM? And if everyone else did it and package management was what it is today you'd have a library for any and everything and you wouldn't have to worry about OS compat or any other bullshit like that.
