But you should know that back in it's peak years, it was a widely popular movement/idea on Jow Forums. This was, of course, before your Mom and the rest of the public knew about it and it still had underground cachet.

To put it another way, look at Jow Forums. It's the second biggest board under /v/ and has inspired large, historically significant real life events (Berkeley, Charlottesville, etc). Yes, it is loathed by many here, but it's also super popular. Same thing for Anonymous back in the day.

I personally think that hacktivists are less identifiable now as hacktivists since dark web communications tools are much more robust now. They can't be detected from their communications as being part of a group so they can't squeal on eachother.
