Don't do anything on your computer for half an hour, then open a file on the hard drive. If it sounds the same, it's probably just the disk spinning up.
Should also try seeing it's SMART status.
Either way this is why you have backups.

it's not a great solution but you could just put all those tags in the filename and then use a file searcher to look for it

Just started to put everything important on SSDs. One of my HDD I replaced with an SSD lasted for 10 years though and was in constant use. It was loud as fuck in the end and would have probably failed when put under heavy load for too long. Still amazed it survived the cloning process.

some of the folder sort options will chug harder than others. sort by name is fast because filenames are cached by the filesystem, where sort by e.g. date-created will choke a little bit because the OS has to poke every file for his metadata, build the list, sort the list and finally display the sorted folder.
thumbnail caching is a similarly fucked up arrangement, it's shit layered on more shit.

Windows supports image tags, but I think its only for certain image formats.
