I've never, ever used 3GB of ram with normal usage.
I hit 3.5GB with virtual machines though

Having 20 chrome tabs open doesn't really serve any purpose. But I won't deny that it's comfortable. On my desktop PC I usually have even more open and it doesn't bat an eye.
On my laptop on the other hand I need to start closing tabs because it rapes my performance. Not because of the RAM ,but because of the small and now even more gimped Intel processor.

I run BEM simulations while I sleep and 16GB is not even close to enough. I barely get by with 32.

Hitting swap file means things get several orders of magnitude slower. The only option is to reduce mesh complexity to fit. 16GB would mean the CPU would finish halfway through the night with coarse, unusable results.
Looking forward to Zen 2 and 24 threads @5GHz, but 128GB will be the bare minimum then.

based. if you don't know whenever you'll need 16gb of ram then you probably don't. all the retards saying "hurr durr i use 20gb constantly" are missing the point. you go on /pcbg/ and you have people telling everyone to get 16gb even if the most ram intensive thing they do is have 10 tabs of porn open.
now it's alright right now when the ram is cheaper than it used to be, but personally i regret getting 16gb when i could've gotten 8gb and then buy another stick after the prices have fallen. i only maxed it out with modded minecraft.

Gonna get 32gb for my next pc after Zen2 launches and there's nothing you can do to stop me.
