Ah, the classic "I don't use this so nobody does, let's get rid of it" fallacy. I use the desktop as it was meant to be used, as a workspace to toss temporary shit I'm working on. Having it there when I close everything acts as a reminder to delete or file away everything when I'm done, and having it all there while I'm working is convenient.
