What drove you over the edge? What made you stop using Windows?

What drove you over the edge? What made you stop using Windows?
I used Windows 2000 through Windows 8.1 just fine, but when they forced updates and (more) spyware on Windows 10, I couldn't stand it anymore. Glad I left when I did, heard that the October Update wiped machines...

What are your stories Jow Forums?

>What made you stop using Windows?
Vista. I used XP as long as it was viable (basically until the end of support) and then jumped straight to Linux (Xubuntu). Never looked back.

>muh black sun
Fuck off back to Jow Forums, shithead.

>black sun
>n*gg*r distro
Well played.

Post wallpaper.

The Fischer-Price look and general slowness of Windows XP on Pentium III hardware made me search for a better alternative.

It's obviously pink you homophobe.

Do you have anything of value to add to the discussion? Take your trash somewhere else you idiot

So you never used 7? Missed out, it was probably the best OS Microsoft ever made (besides XP)

I was always fond of the XP look, I thought XP ran well on P3 machines? Was this after the service packs?

>be me
>update to win10 may update
>disable telemetry with built-in services app
>win10pro may update allows u to disable updates for a yr
>be me again

constantly growing windows installation size
telemetry
shit font rendering
shit hidpi scaling

>current year
>not being homofash
lmao at your life

Just wanted to try something new with Ganooslashlinux and just found it to be better suited for me. Couple that with Wine and I never had to look back aside from the odd joke.
Also, I believe pic related will be a better pape for showcasing your nazi tendencies as your current doesn't fully resemble a true black sun.

My windows install broke and instead of reinstalling I wiped my windows partition and switched to my linux install i was already dual-booting

This

I think that Win 7 is nothing but Vista SP3.

Proprietary software and drivers, registry, lack of customization, telemetry. It's mentally hard to me to run .exe files at this point.

Attached: sleepy.jpg (1080x1080, 226K)

Switch to dual boot: XP. It was ugly, unstable and full of annoyances compared to w2k. Never understood why XP got so much praise.
Getting rid of Windows completely: W10. Tipping point was some update overwriting my bootloader twice within two weeks, but at that point I barely ever booted into Windows anymore anyway.

Sometime around 2017-2018 I built a new computer with Ryzen 1800X, NVME SSD, 1080 Ti, etc. Around 2018, Windows 10 said it had an update (I think it was 1803), but it would fail to install the update and I'd have to hard reset the machine, which would boot into recovery mode. This went on for about a year: every few months, it would say an "update is ready", and that update would freeze at about 43% or so on reboot. So I had this Windows 10 machine probably out of date and full of security vulnerabilities. The only recourse I could find was to reinstall Windows from scratch. I figured it I was going to do that, I might as well make the jump to bare-metal GNU/Linux. I do all my programming in GNU/Linux VMs anyway. Windows was just a VM launcher.

windows in general is unmaintainable.
any changes you make get overwritten by updates or services, it's you vs the os.
and this is even more true with each version. 10 is a clusterfuck.
and the cherry on the top is that it uses a lot of resources for no reason, explorer crashes, it's slow even compared to kde/gnome, etc.
seriously people staying on windows while browsing Jow Forums must be braindead retards or underage faggots who use disscord and gayme
????????????????????????????????

I've never had a Windows installation break. Did you do anything or update a driver or did it just shit it's self?

I think that was the October update, the one that doesn't work with USB hard drives or zip diskettes

Yeah no kidding, when I had Windows 10 installed the icons would flicker and every update reverted my registry settings.

I guess since literal retards a flooding the PC sector, that they dumbed it down. Still hate dealing with it though.

Again?

With females this time.

It was fucked beyond repair, system froze each time i tried to use admin rights and half of my files were "not found at location" by explorer. I'm fairly sure its not a malware, as i checked quite often.

Damn

>Fascism
Cringe
I installed Linux because I couldn't do hackintosh with the computer I had in 2010 (AMD). I'll never go back to Windows. I'm on MacOS now though.

It was the W10 ad that popped up in W7. Yes, I could have disabled it by fucking with the registry, but I paid money for my copy of Windows, and they were shoving ads into it. I was done. I came to Jow Forums for the first time, and went into stupid questions thread, and was guided towards Mint, being told it was a great first distro for people familiar with Windows 7. They were right.

Could I please have your wallpaper, OP?

i swapped my main pc (gaming pc) out for a slightly slower but still competent phenom ii x4 box and installed debian xfce.

I really enjoyed using it for the purposes of web browsing, but when I have to boot up windows for writing assignments or to play games, I just don't think the additional customisation is worth the extra hassle.

if there was some gpu-passthrough esque way of clicking a switch and swapping to the other os instantly with the same monitors and peripherals then i'd definitely be using linux.

First a Windows update broke my browser and I had to system restore. Then I kept having other problems with the system and I decided that I don't want to deal with that crap any more.

let your mom have a break dude

I did as soon as I installed windows 10. I've been messing with linux since the vista days but I decided to switch after hearing all the shit about windows 10 and also because I just got sick of windows in general. obviously I started on ubuntu but I slowly went up and trying out more diy distros. I stopped at source based distros like gentoo and been on it ever since

What drove you to shill linux, cult obligations?

Are you butthurt because you're being paid by Microsoft, or because you're too incompetent to put an .iso into USB stick?

> I did as soon as I installed windows 10
lol this.
> installed windows 10 in 2015
> massive lags on SSD, start button isn't responding, even more metro shit
> try to roll back
> something went wrong
> roll back from my own backup
> started to use Linux as soon as I got a new laptop after a short trial when I booted it off external HDD
Impressive. It's like jumping to another level: less paranoia about malware, more possibilities to use whatever I needed from my server, but right here, on the laptop: building software, ssh'ing to Amazon and other VPS, free virtualization software on par with VMWare, sane shell which plays nice with adb. Also same software mostly, or alright alternatives. Linux desktop year is here.

It was Windows 10 that did it.

I stayed on 7 and waited out Windows 8 seeing if Microsoft would reverse course and say "Yeah, we're sorry, that was a really fucking stupid thing to do, here's the conventional UI back. Enjoy your Windows Classic theme again". I don't know why I was stupid enough to think they might do that, they stuck fast to that retarded "ribbon" shit in Office, but I hoped they would. The doubt was planted in my head though, so I started switching to applications that were cross-platform. Then when they released 10 I saw that not only were they doubling down on that shitheap of an interface, but they were also adding advertising and spyware and forced updates. They also conspicuously failed to add anything to the OS (in either 8 or 10) that actually appealed to me and made me want to use it. I suspect I wasn't alone in that and that's why they badgered everyone so hard to move, they don't make any money off of masses of people saying "This is fine, no need for the next version"

I procrastinated on 7 a bit longer but as soon as GWX happened and they started backporting telemetry and trying really hard to force that to be included in updates, I was off for good. There were and still are things I find obnoxious about Linux, but switching wasn't nearly as painful as I feared, and the result is still far nicer than Windows.

Not gonna lie or was when steel announced proton and it worked.

I didn't even bother with dual-booting or using a virtual machine, I tried to change the OS myself but ran into some problems so I asked my techie friend to do it for me.
I'm on Xubuntu now, works like a charm, and I'll be honest, I don't use my computer for much more than work / internet / games.
So I really appreciate the fact it's given me less trouble then Windows ever did.

Windows 10 is far more powerful than Windows 7, and runs twice as fast. It is also much harder to pirate, and this point more than anything else has the Linux crowd in a panic.

It wont be long until Windows 7 is no longer supported, and when that happens, what is Linux going to do ?

Linux will have to find a way to work under Windows 10 from here on, since it wont be able to rely on 7 being readily available anymore.

Linux may seem like a good alternative to Office, but all that is happening in linux is that the windows interface is cleverly hidden away. It still needs the drivers and software services in order to run, and in most cases - that happens WITHOUT a valid windows licence.

This is just plain piracy.

Windows 10 will finally put an end to this blatant abuse of intellectual property, and linux should decline, taking the pirates with it.

Anyone that supports the continuation of 7 in place of 10 surely has a hidden agenda .. and you will surely be caught out.

What the hell are you talking about?

is it possible to still use windows 95? i guess not, since Windows 7+ is a requirement for most modern programs

what

People who work actually need/use Windows. Linux as a desktop is nice to tinker with but not much more than that.

Attached: df9.jpg (285x325, 32K)

You can use Linux to get most things done. Most servers are on Linux.

Consumer market and workplaces continue to use Windows for the most part.

If the only software you need for job is making PowerPoints, calculations, graphs, internet research and other boring office work, Linux will more than drop the job.

Windows 10 getting shittier, that little annoying "unregistered copy" in the corner. I've been using Ubuntu 19.04 since it released and.. i'm getting along pretty okay, i'm mostly using it as a desktop OS so i'm not getting into the more "fun" stuff however.

much harder to pirate my ass

Attached: workn linx.png (584x174, 39K)

What exactly do you do that can't be done on Linux?

For me it was the high RAM usage and terrible performance of Windows 10. I’m never going near that garbage fire ever again.

I created a dual boot machine for AC programming class and also a Linux class. And honestly I really liked Ubuntu. However, learning Office is what is going to help with getting a job and RStudio works in any OS. Trust me if there was good support for Microsoft Office on Linux I would be on that like stink on shit.

Attached: images.jpg (225x225, 2K)

What about LibreOffice? It can use all the Microsoft Office extensions by default, so if someone sends you a .docx you can open it in Libreoffice, edit it and then save it back as a .docx, and nobody would ever know or care.

i wont ever answer that
you're gonna offer me terminal alternatives or some crapware shit that has to be configured or some shit

Win10 pro is $3 on ebay lmao

With LibreOffice there are some errors in translation so to speak. And excel is better for larger files.

So nothing, in other words. Bet you're just a cubicle monkey and don't even need anything other than office and web browser.

so if i dont use linux because some software doesnt have support or i dont want to rely on obscure alternatives i am a "cubicle monkey"?? do you call everyone like that? yeah pinacle of Jow Forums freetard

I want to play Counter Strike Global Offensive, StarCraft 1, Roblox, listen to music, play videos on YouTube, save images.

What OS and mods should I go with? The latest update made me really pissed me off when Microsoft said like 3 years ago that they're no longer supporting Windows 7, like they're doing me a favor by installing their pajeet bloatware on my OS for no reason.

I was playing CS GO on 140 fps, now it's hanging at 50 fps.

I understand your point.

Deep down I don't want Linux to ever become popular because I know the corporations would jump on it and find a way to rape it one way or another.

Xubuntu 19.04

Well, since you can't even answer a simple question...

There's definitely software that has no good Linux alternatives, but I doubt you can even name any, let alone actually use one on daily basis. You're just a retarded cubicle monkey and/or MS shill.

Thank you, OP.

this. I know that free software advocates just want the good stuff to spread and for greater adoption of their method/principles, but the reality is it would have the opposite effect. slow and slight growth by curious hobbyists as it is now is ideal. if gnu+linux were to become mainstream it would be hijacked and corrupted

Microsoft is already doing that. But then again there's very little that Microsoft has created. They're very good at locating the enemy closing with and acquiring and making it their own. Examples being WSL and Azure.

I don't want another OS.

I want my Windows 7 without aero bullshit and without those 130 updates waiting around the corner to rape my performance.
For fucks I haven't used an anti virus and haven't defragmented in 10 years.
And soon I'll switch to Ethernet cause the WiFi is getting unbearable.

Kill yourself luddite

Truly we must follow in this man's mindset.

He wants his cake and to eat it too, the absolute standards of this man.

>There's definitely software that has no good Linux alternatives

even if i didnt use mircosoft products but windows 10. there would be still more alternatives in w10 and support than most of linux alternatives, maybe if you werent insulting and calling every one a "cubicle monkey" or a "ms shill" you would understand that some people have different preferences. but i think thats too much to ask for Jow Forums

What the fuck are you even talking about? I never once claimed that you should stop using Windows. I just asked you a simple question which you then refused to answer because you either can't answer it or are just an idiot.

So my story is similar to yours, OP. I realized that it was impractical to keep trying to de-botnet my Windows installs. Even if I was successful at the moment, it would continue to get more tedious as time went on. Between that and wanting to learn the *nix file system and core utilities, I bit the bullet and switched to Linux. It was a drawn-out process, but I did it, and I never see myself looking back.

I fucked up my XP install because I was dumb and the only other OS I had laying around the house was an old Xubuntu CD I had burned a few months prior so I tried it and ended up liking it so I stayed on linux full time ever since.

I want software to be free and open rather than being a walled garden that dictates how you should do your computing, the linux ecosystem fucks up in this regard occasionally but proprietary software and windows are fundamentally opposed to this idea

why i would want linux alternatives when i already have alternatives on my windows10?? dont you think that i already tried linux so called alternatives??

National Socialism is not Fascism. I also bet that you think both ideologies are right-wing lol.

Okay, you on the other hand can go torture yourself.
I'll go back to my 3dfx Voodoos and Quake before the market was overrun by 2-4 fat idiots

>twice as fast
How does it feel to pull out stats of your ass?

>It wont be long until Windows 7 is no longer supported
You said that 6 years ago, Intelidiot. Nobody will miss your 100+ bloatware updates. Nobody.

Here's your (You) retard

As much as I enjoyed Windows 7, the sketchy shit connected to W10 that was being backported to 7 made me start looking elsewhere. (I didn't think 7 was pure and perfect before then, but the boiling over of outcries from people got me worried.) I think I was looking stuff up on /spg/ on this board when I hopped over to /fglt/ out of curiosity, and what I saw made it look rather interesting. After testing a couple distros out in VM's I finally put it on my laptop as the main OS, and I see no reason to switch back.

W7 is still on this laptop, but I almost never use it. I used to love 7, but after using various distros it's honestly not that pleasant in comparison.

I bought a craptop and wanted it to go fast

This might not be the thread for me but I don't think I've had many problems with Windows 10. I don't remember having many problems with it. I might have had a few, maybe. There is no reason for me to use Linux and I haven't switched to Linux and I don't think I will.

>What drove you over the edge? What made you stop using Windows?
Windows 10 made me stop to willingly use Windows. I still keep my 7 partition due to one specific software that doesn't work on Wine no matter what and I need it for work. That's about it.

Attached: choose your difficulty.jpg (941x610, 104K)

I can't believe there are people that still thinks linux can run on a computer without Windows underneath it, at all, as in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services.

It's just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer from start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of Windows. Not possible.

Linux is blatantly THEFT of intellectual property.

poor quality bait

cope

> muh feelings waaaaaaaaaa go back to pol

>What made you stop using Windows?
Took a Linux course back in college a few years ago, and I've been fascinated by it ever since.
Pretty glad I switched before Wangblows 10 fucked everything over.

yes being human and having feelings is bad

Bloat and instability.

yeah cause that was totally my point, you retard

Maybe it is bait, but it is also truth.

Started with 3.11, used until Windows 7, skipping Vista.
I already didn't like windows 7's file explorer a lot, but the down syndrome ui from 8 made me switch to linux.

replace windows with unix, and yeah you almost have a point. even with the assistance of reverse engineering, you are still building a new product with the potential for wildly different design philosophy.

even worse b8

I haven't switched because Dekstop Linux is shit. Show me one distro that doesn't have significant screen tearing out of the box and I'll switch.

Nice job outing the newfags

>Most servers are on Linux.
servers != desktop you fucking crack nuggets

lmao all of you should lurk more

2/10 bait

what is systemd
